So, after all the hype and rumours of disaster, whats World War Z like? Well, even though its directed by Marc Forster, it reminded me of the action films made by Roland Emmerich, which range from the nearly sublime (Independence Day) to the totally ridiculous (10,000 BC).
Its slap-bang in the middle of that quality spectrum, round about the level of Godzilla.
Movies dont come bigger than this, and zombie flicks usually come a lot smaller. In Shaun Of The Dead, the undead had to content themselves with snacking on a handful of British actors in a deserted pub. Here its the future of humanity thats at stake. This time, instead of Simon Pegg, Brad Pitt is available to save us, and the skies are soon full of crashing helicopters, screaming jets and stunt people being sucked out of aircraft.
The film is impressive in its big set pieces. The initial panic on the streets of Philadelphia is thrilling, as is the fall of Jerusalem to the undead horde and an airborne sequence that might easily have been called Zombies On A Plane.
But the film is horrifyingly feeble when it comes to characterisation. All we know about Pitts Gerry is that he loves his family, but no one has given this hero any exceptional qualities. The same goes for the other characters: as uninteresting a lot as Ive seen in a disaster movie.
We never know why the powers-that-be at the United Nations think so highly of Gerry. Hes resourceful, but doesnt seem particularly brave, bright or knowledgeable. It is a central weakness that, without any particular expertise, he solves the mystery of how to fight the zombies before anyone else.
Negative reaction: The last 40 minutes of the film where rewritten and reshot

I really liked Man of Steel. While the political undertones of Into Darkness almost ruined it for me, the CONSERVATIVE undertones enhanced my enjoyment of Superman.
One of the villains sites evolution as to why the human race has to die, just before she has her a$$ handed to her...
All controlling government was one of main factors in the destruction of Krypton.
Eugenics is another reason for the breakdown of Kryptonian society.
Kal El is born “naturally.” The first such birth on Krypton in centuries.
When the military man asks Superman if he can be trusted, he answers “I was raised in Kansas, you don’t get much more American than that.”
Family, both biological and adopted, play a huge role in forming Superman’s character and morality.
He doesn’t sleep with Lois Lane.
I could go on and on, but there is a reason the LIBERAL movie critics don’t like this movie, which is why you should see it.
I will see World War Z when it comes out on Netflix, which will probably be before the end of the year...
All zombies fear him unlike any other man!!! Die you mo^%#&$^#^ing zombies! Die Die Die ya mo^%&#%$#ers!!!!
I loved Django. It was incredible. I hope you were able to enjoy it. If not, purchase the DVD immediately!!!!!
Jamie Foxx is a racist, I will never watch anything with him in it again.
Dang! How do you make a zombie flick family-friendly? Do they say grace before they eat people’s brains?
You have just insulted all zombies!
This movie can do it!!! Long live the zombie flick!!!!!!!!!
Hmmmm ... could be tough to decide which side to support ...
they prolly know better... 8^)
I voted for Barack because he was black. Cuz thats why other folks vote for other people because they look like them Thats American politics, pure and simple. [Obama's] message didnt mean s**t to me.
"When it comes down to it, they wouldnt have elected a ni**er. Because, whats a ni**er? A ni**er is scary. Obama aint scary at all. Ni**ers dont have beers at the White House. Ni**ers dont let some white dude, while you in the middle of a speech, call [him] a liar. A ni**er would have stopped the meeting right there and said, Who the f*ck said that?I hope Obama gets scary in the next four years, cuz he aint gotta worry about getting re-elected.
His words, not mine.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
This was a fun book. As I was reading it, I wondered how they would make a movie. To replicate the book would lend itself more to a miniseries. Too many stories, too many stars.
Too bad these guys seemed to have screwed it up.
I really didn’t enjoy “Django.” Christoph Waltz was great, and Dicaprio was fun, but the story was a lot more mean than usual for Tarantino. Jamie Foxx was awful in it, too. Overall a weak effort. I much prefer “Inglorious Basterds” and “Kill Bill.”
The movie and book versions of World War Z are like those of I, Robot: almost no relationship beyond general setting and superficial depictions of main characters.
World War Z should have been directed by Ken Burns. It’s a documentary, interviewing survivors and showing imagery from the events.
Anyways, going back to the book vs the movie. In the book the zombies are slow ...very slow. They do not scale walls. They do not run like frenzied banshees. They represent a slow but persistent threat, which is always and forever slowly stalking you. A threat that could have easily been fixed early enough, but is now everywhere. This is especially shown at the Battle of Yonkers, where the US Army faces off against the undead hordes. Total shock and awe, tanks and Apache helicopters, MLRS rockets and even napalm-type incendiaries. It should have been an easy win. However, rather than have the soldiers at strategic places (e.g. on top of buildings shooting down), they were exposed. At this time the undead numbered in the millions, and when the bullets ran out ....
I watched the movie. The zombies run. There is absolutely nothing to do with the book apart from the name. Nothing about the Chinese nuclear submarine and what it went through. Nothing about the millions of North koreans that are zombified in the tunnels. Nothing about the Battle of Yonkers. Nothing about the airforce pilot having to make it through zombie territory after ejecting. Nothing about how the plan the saved the world came from a South African Apartheid Government plan that was meant to save the minority whites in SA from the majority blacks in the 70s and 80s, and how the same plan to save the few from the many was used against the zombies. Nothing from the book, apart from a couple of things here and there such as the Israeli awareness of the threat due to the harsh lessons from the 6 Day War when they found out saying something is 'impossible' can be dangerous for a small country.
The movie seriously messed up.
My theory is there are too many Chiefs in Hollywood. They get a great script and being that Hollywood is mostly run by liberals with mutant super-know-it-all sociopathic egos, they *all* have to put their 2 cents in until the script is re-written so many times it’s just an absolute mess. I don’t think anyway has absolute control over a movie in Hollywood no matter how big their name is. And being that most of them are cocaine fanatics they probably sit around and say “yes” to everything no matter how ridiculous. I mean seriously, how hard is it to make a good movie? You have the script and the story boards drawn out well before one shot is taken, so they must know well in advance what the movie is going to be like, yet they still turn out utter crap. How does that happen? I think it’s the Chief theory: All these idiots add their two cents as the movie is being filmed.
Like I was saying in another post, I think the problem with Hollyweird is it’s mostly run by liberals, and with liberals you get all these fanatical sociopathic drug fueled egos. All of them have to put their 2 cents in because they all think they’re geniuses, and I *know* one of them mentioned the movie “28 days later” and the success of that, so of course they had to make the zombies run as well. You have all these Chiefs adding their 2 cents and before you know it the movie resembles almost nothing of the original script. I would imagine to make a good movie one would have to be like a tyrant, telling all these people to shut the hell up, but then that director or whoever would get a bad name because that’s how liberals work: When they don’t get their way they get revenge like their heroes Al Qaida.
