“Take it easy, I’m the police” probably didn’t help his case.

“At that point he’s defending his life — he’s on the ground, he’s about to lose consciousness from the people who are beating him and draws his weapon in defense of his life,” Camden said. “

George Zimmerman would agree.

“Posters who are upset at the father and relative for attacking the officer should consider how they would react if it was their daughter/granddaugthter/niece/female relative bleeding after being struck by a government employee’s vehicle.”

I wouldn’t start beating on the guy until he was about to lose consciousness. If the officer’s story is true, he nothing wrong.

Where are you getting California from??? And you’re correct. It would have been so much better had the father beat the cop to death.

“Take it easy, I’m the Police.” **** Note the attitude: “It doesn’t matter that a child is in pain; you shouldn’t be angry at me, I’m a government employee.” Posters who are upset at the father and relative for attacking the officer should consider how they would react if it was their daughter/granddaugthter/niece/female relative bleeding after being struck by a government employee’s vehicle.

The attitude is simple. When an accident occurs, the reaction should not be to physically attack the other party. He was trying to get the father to not attack him. He failed. After taking a spill from a several hundred pound bike at speed, I'm sure he was in no shape to hold off multiple attackers with his bare hands. So he reached for his gun.

Yup. On my job, they train us that even if you’re only being beaten with fists, if you reasonably think you’re going out of the picture you can use deadly force.

Very tragic and perhaps police abuse but what is a 4 year old girl doing running across a busy street at 10:30 PM?

She was with her 18 year old cousin according to the report.

I think I would try to help my child instead.

I don’t buy the fight or flight rationale. Neither I nor my husband would respond in such a way in an accident. I doubt seriously that any of my neighbors or people living in my town would act that way.

This father should have been focused on the needs of his child, not on delivering a beat down to the motorcycle rider.

The fact that his first response was violent says a lot about the culture of violence that permeates urban areas and the decay of civil society.

Except for the accident, sounds a bit like what happened to George Zimmerman.

There is no evidence that the girl’s relatives did not help their child.

Most people would not dispassionately listen to “take it easy, I’m a police officer” from the person who just struck their child.

There was no case. When an accident occurs, physically attacking the other party is not what civilized people do.

That is exactly right. :)

The fact that the police officer’s response was “take it easy, I’m a police officer” after *striking a four year old*, tells us a lot about the government employee involved.

Being 4.

I’m a hovering parent and had to chase down each one of my kids more than once.

Most people would not physically strike the other party. Maybe that's your reflex, but it's not a normal reaction.

If my objective were to be to *not* be involved in a fight, the last thing I would say to a parent angered at what happened to their child would be “take it easy”.

“Take it easy” is what you say to someone whom you believe to be *unjustifiably* upset or perturbed.

Most people would not provoke the father of an accident victim by suggesting his emotions were unjustified or unwarranted.
