The last huge fire out here in California was set by a fireman want to be.

I don’t have any first-hand knowledge of the area, but my speculation was that the underlying cause is probably the stupidity of the environmental regulators, who will not allow cattle grazing or brush fires or other measures that would reduce the dangers of out of control fires.

It’s not just what started it, but why it burned so fiercely once started. Sooner or later, fires are bound to happen, and the worst ones are in national parks and forests and other areas that are insanely managed by government idiots, in the name of being green.

Liberals or eco terrorists, take your pick. The black forest fire took out 400+ million dollar homes. Just the kind of affluent people eco terrorists are jealous of and the kind of environment they like to liberate from mans influence. This happened in El Paso county, home of Sheriff Maketa, one of the prime movers in the lawsuit against the unconstitutional and otherwise terrible people control (aka gun control) laws. He is the chief thorn in a lot of powerful sides... I absolutely would not put it past liberals to do something terrible like this, believing their end justifies the means.

There were no underwater non-saleable properties in the Black Forest before the fire - heck, there were only 3 houses under 250K (and they were wrecks). A VERY nice area with a lot of rebuilding/restarting to do.

Oh, add to the suspicion the fact that where it started - upwind side of the forest, and when it started - the time of day with the highest winds... Toss in that it didn’t happen until after several days of 90 degree weather and single digit relative humidity. If you were going to try to burn down the forest and cause the most damage, you could not have picked a better set of circumstances. Bad luck? Coincidence? Or sinister planning?

In 1978, an arsonist placed a lighted cigarette inside a book of matches, stuffed cigarette and matches into a Dixie cup, and threw the cup into some dry bushes behind the Whizzin's shopping mall in Agoura, Calif. The cigarette acted as a fuse, eventually igniting the book of matches, which set the Dixie cup on fire. The flames quickly spread into the dry bushes--and beyond. When the fire was finally put out, it had burned all the way to the Pacific Ocean 13 miles away and destroyed dozens of homes.

A couple dozen terrorists scanning Weather.com for forecasts of Santa Ana winds could create havoc throughout California by setting off dozens of such home-made fire bombs.

It could also have been someone burning weeds or pine needles in their back yard. I have seen people doing that even on red flag days. They think they are careful and it won’t happen to them. All it takes is one ember getting into a crack on log on a breezy day and it can sit there smoldering for several days before it catches up. Then it can burn several thousand acres in a few hours.

There’s no conspiracy. The Colorado Rockies are a disaster waiting to happen. Forest fires have long been a part of nature but poor forest management coupled with residential encroachment has resulted in years of fire suppression. Now the forests are filled with deadwood and beetle-kill and they’re bone-dry. One of these days a flash of lightening will be all it takes and the whole place is going to explode like the Hindenburg.

I thought Terry Barton pretty much burned Colorado down a few years ago?
