Microsoft was hoping Windows 8 would be such a hit with enterprises that they'd stop using Windows XP, an aging operating system that debuted in 2001. That hasn't happened, but HP thinks enterprises will have no choice but to upgrade to new PCs when Microsoft stops releasing security fixes for XP next April.
"We think this will bring a big opportunity for HP," Enrique Lore, SVP and GM of HP's business PC unit, said in a press conference Monday on the eve of HP's Discover customer conference, as reported by Computerworld's Patrick Thibodeau.
Lore said 40% to 50% of businesses are still using PCs running XP. But HP isn't assuming they'll upgrade to Windows 8 PCs.
John Tomesco, an exec in HP's PC and printers group, told IT World Canada's Nestor Arellano that businesses could choose Windows 7which he described as "a very popular OS"or Windows 8, depending on their needs.
Microsoft has been trying to get XP users to upgrade for several years now. But Windows XP still had about 38% of the worldwide PC market in May, according to NetMarketShare.
Enterprises will have to upgrade before next April because that's when Microsoft will stop pluggin security holes in XP. Many will choose Windows 7 because they don't want to train employees to use Microsoft's new Metro interface in Windows 8.

A good portion of what friends and relatives bring me to look at are hardware problems, except for the malware and virus crap, which is their or more likely their kids fault.
Sometimes they are also capable of outstandingly botching up a new program install.
Windows 8 - It has electrolytes!
Yep, I know this — I'd like to see it on AMD's 64-bit architecture (x86_64), but that doesn't look like it'll happen.
About the only fast way to get there (as far as I can see), would be a VM that emulates the Alpha or Itanium instruction set on i64.
Yep, I was looking at simh earlier today, but I might be able to grab some Itainums [off ebay or whatever] for a fair price should I need the actual HW.
The biggest barriers, IMO, to porting VMS to the i64 would be the lack of the Bliss compiler for your target architecture. You could write a program to translate the Macro stuff over, but all that Bliss-32 code... woof. Thats a huge undertaking.
Yeah... which is why I'd likely go with grabbing the Itainum (or Alpha) HW: less work.
In post #67, The Cajun had a suggestion (quote):
"Had this happen on a relatives desktop 2 months ago, reseated the memory boards, took care of the problem.
Went on afterward and CAREFULLY cleaned the memory card contacts (2 mem boards), no reports of trouble since.
Original symptom, it would hang on boot up, wouldn't get to Win start up screen, Hd would stop spinning (Win 7 OS)."
Some people recommend gently cleaning the RAM stick contacts with a pencil eraser. (Disclaimer: That isn't to say that *I* recommend it. I merely mention as an option.)
Otherwise... if there's no POST screen, and no error beeps, you may need to find someone locally (friend/relative?) to sit actually down in front of it, and trouble-shoot the system.

Then hit Menu on that crappy Ribbon Menu, and Office 2003 all comes back like it was. On all Office Suite Products.
Sweet.
Thanks for posting this, I think I'll be downloading and using it.
7 is a 100X better than XP in every way. Don’t bash it because your ancient apps don’t work on it. The biggest thing with moving to 7 is your file system will no longer fall apart within 6 months of imaging. You don’t need continual maintenance to keep it healthy.
The use Windows Powershell. it’s available in windows 7 or 8.
I’ve seen that look before, but her favorite is the little Remington .22 speed rifle with the *BIG* 3X9 scope :)
Ahh, Capitalism ?
“The century of Self”
The best of Ma Bell, sanctioned by our fearless leaders.
Only to be destroyed by gov’t with it’s ashes rising like a phoenix for the new fangled way.
As we push the edges of possibilities, Capitalist’s rely on all avenues of opportunities.
Because we can.
Well, if you do, gimme a ping, would you? One of these days, I’ve a notion to buy an old Alpha system and set up a VMS system again, and I’d like to keep in touch with people who have a similar notion.
The Alpha was a sweeeet architecture. It’s a shame it’s gone by the wayside now...
Don't knock what you don't know. Tablet-based work is still work.
In fact, IT can limit the tablet to just doing work-based tasks, and by keeping storage of documents on the net, you make your data more robust and available for sharing. Always-available 4G networks on tablets mean that you're never out of touch with that collaborative data, or remote-wipe a device if security needs require it.
Can the same thing be done on Windows? Sure, it can with any OS. But tablets are cheaper, more portable, and have everything for this style of IT built right in.
Win 7 is an excellent platforum and OS.
For what it is, sure - I run it, along with Mac OS, and Linux. There's nothing really wrong with Win 7 at all, as far as being a modern "heavyweight" OS. (Putting aside my UNIX biases for the moment.)
But heavyweight OSes are overkill for many business tasks. Running a pay point? (Used to be called a "cash register"?) Writing sales pitches? Filing an expense report? Communicating via e-mail or IM?
If the task could be done 12 years ago with an XP computer, odds are that the task can be done today with a tablet. To many businesses and workers, that's of great appeal. CHOMP! There goes PC sales down the toilet.
Thanks
I’m going to take this thing apart.
I think you are right.
bad contacts that need to be cleaned up.
Yup, I used an ink eraser very lightly.
Like you said, not the optimum thing to do, but the contacts were very tarnished when looked at with X20 jewelers glasses.
Usually a re-seat will suffice most times.
Just taking a wild guess, would say it's probably memory boards or Hd.
Bring back W98 and I’ll be happy.
Okay. When my XP breaks, maybe I’ll try “7”, if it’s the same.
Thanks.
I currently run XP, and I have very seldom had to perform the maintenance you write of.
By the way, Microsoft messed up by naming their product “Windows 7” instead of - - I dunno - - “XP2”
Can you “break” XP ?
