June 9th, 1943 (WEDNESDAY)
MEDITERRANEAN SEA: The heavy shelling of Pantelleria continues, and the Allies say that it will go on until the island surrenders.
Medium and heavy bombers, and fighters of the Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) continue pounding Pantelleria Island in the Mediterranean in predawn hours and during the afternoon. (Jack McKillop)
TERRITORY OF ALASKA: ALEUTIAN ISLANDS: The Japanese evacuation of Kiska Island in the Aleutians Islands by submarines continues.
Submarine HIJMS I-9 departs Paramushiru Island, Kurile Islands for Kiska and is never heard from again.
Meanwhile, HIJMS I-169 unloads one ton of weapons and ammunition and two tons of food for the Japanese remaining on Kiska and evacuates 31 Navy and 29 civilian personnel. After getting underway, a US vessel fires six rounds at the submarine at 2250 hours local in a dense fog off the north coast of the island. (Jack McKillop)
CANADA: Corvette HMCS Fredericton arrives at Liverpool, Nova Scotia for refit. (Dave Shirlaw)

I know a WWII Navy vet who has spoken of his participation in the Zoot Suit Riots. He distinctly mentioned a homosexual aspect to some of the zoot suitors. I had never heard of that and there is little information available, although lesbians in zoot suits at the time seems well known.

Top left, page 1: Gee, the president wants to raise taxes and force the people to do something they don’t want to do. Shocking.

We went to war over Hitlers rumored WMDs?!?!?Gas worries probably traced to the death camps. By the time allies heard the reports, "Jews being gassed in the east" may have become "Gas being used in the east".
Americans did die as a result of poison gas but the largest such incident was gas loaded aboard Liberty ships that was released when bombed by the Luftwaffe at Bari, Italy on Dec 2, 1943.

Certainly gas was used in WWI and the expectation had to be ready for it.
To: a fool in paradise
Certainly gas was used in WWI and the expectation had to be ready for it.True but the article cited mounting evidence that the Axis powers were making significant preparations to use gas.

A commission appointed by the Governor concluded the Zoot Suit Riots had two main causes, racism, and (I know it's hard to believe) the press, which seemed to associate a zoot suiter with every crime reported. The Mayor, of course, disagreed, saying the Riots were instigated by local hoodlums. One politician claimed Axis agents were behind the Riots, but there was absolutely no evidence of that. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote that the country needed overdue work on race relations with Mexicans, to which the LA Times responded by calling her a communist.
Only in LaLa Land, the place that fought the Battle of Los Angeles against a nonexistent Japanese air fleet.
