Not silly... but have you been watching “Brain Games” on (I think) the History Channel? They had a game they played the other day about the brain’s need to feel accurate and asked people “If you can give any number as the low end of a range and any number as the high end, can you tell me how many books are in the Bible?” It was amazing how many people tried to give a 10-15 spread when the obvious answer is 1 to 1 quadrillion.

LOL!

Never been there, I see. Either that, or you made a visit there, once...

Was stationed at DM in Tucson for three years. Visited Ft. Huachuca a few times for official purposes. Mostly travel down during the day, and up all night kind of stuff. Not a bad base, a little cooler there than in Tucson.

I like that... “Porta-Potty Contactor”.

If I get a contractor that tries to cut corners or blame-someone-else-first instead of doing it right, they probably don’t like me by the end of the job.

OTOH, if I get one who wants to do it right and fix it when he does it wrong, he usually likes me by the end of the job because I will try to work with him.

The porta-potty contractor can kiss my a$$ and do it to the exact letter of the plans and specs. They typically don’t like me, but I don’t really care. In fact, I kinda hope they see my name on a set of plans and say “I ain’t a gonna bid no nothing from dat stupit archi-ma-text no more” (or whatever the equivalent spanish version of that is).

Sub-contractor (even indivdual workers) and I usually have a great relationship once they figure it out.

Oh, a complainer, eh?

Don’t you know you’re just supposed to buy the Project Manager a case of his favorite beer when you come to talk about how the project is going to be run?

I know, because I’m a project manager.

1 to 1 quadrillion.

Is an Avogadro's level estimate?

We were in Tucson for quite a while, so DM is familiar. One of my nephews was stationed at Huachuca for six months TDY before going on to bigger and better things.

Ironically, Igor (late husband) was part of a government effort outside of Gila Bend, and appreciated the work Huachuca did.

I’ve not done that... but I did buy the whole mechanical crew a steak dinner one time for going above and beyond the call on a project.

The Brain Games show was really interesting. The rules were that there was no lower limit or upper limit to the range that could be given... yet people tried their best to be as exact as possible. Interesting what your mind tries to do.

I love that show.

” If I get a contractor that tries to cut corners or blame-someone-else-first instead of doing it right, they probably don’t like me by the end of the job. “

I always joke when I walk around a trade show like BOMA that I’m looking for my “next ex-sprinkler contractor” or my “next ex-electrician.”

I know exactly what you’re talking about. I had a ‘71 Spitfire that taught me very quickly to use hand signals instead of the turn signals ... and blowing out the flames in the steering column after the smoke started flowing out of it.

Learned a great lesson working on the Spitfire. You know they had very little ground clearance. I was replacing the exhaust system and had the car up on four jackstands. One bolt was tough and I needed a little more leverage, so my foot searched out something to push against. All of a sudden one of the jackstands went clattering out across the floor and the car was teetering back and forth on the other three.

Ah... the memories of working on my old Spit. I got so good at changing out a rear-end half axle that I could complete the job in under 30 minutes.
