Buried in the proposed rewrite of the nation’s massive education law are protections for gay and lesbian students that its supporters liken to the landmark 1972 protections for the rights of female athletes in high school and college.

Senate Democrats on Tuesday released a 1,150-page revision of the law governing the nation’s elementary and secondary schools, formally known as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act but more commonly called No Child Left Behind.

In it, they include student nondiscrimination language that, if passed, would threaten schools’ funding if gay and lesbian students are bullied or harassed.

non-gay students can still be bullied to death (literally) with no repercussions for the assailants.

One courageous school board just denied reading a “transgender” student’s desired (fake) name instead of her real name at graduation. I’m sure this law revision would quash that.

Is the Department of Education still on the Republican's kill list, or do they just trot that out once every four years? Let the states fund their own schools without the federales and these problems go away.

Nerds, jocks, and brains, fat kids (the “obese”), smelly kids, and those with glasses may still be teased, insulted, harassed, and assaulted.

And the cool kids at TMZ, Comedy Central, MSNBC will all applaud.

So much for tolerance, diversity, and protection of chil’run.

No Child Left Behind was one of Bush's worst legacies. Any government program that is self-perpetuating is as bad as Communism.

EVERY passed federal law should have a sunset provision no longer than 9 years (2 election cycles). After that, if not renewed, COMPLETELY GONE. This includes are federal tax code.

Again, the states have never delegated to Congress via the Constitution the specific power to regulate, tax and spend for public school issues.

Does this mean they’ll now have to put as much money into gay and transgendered athletics as they do into women’s athletics?

God help us. What ever happened to teachers making sure NO ONE was bullied or harassed? Why does this have to turn into a special federal program for certain groups? I don’t want gay kids bullied. There was a gay kid in my high school who was bullied mercilessly, including physically assaulted. He wasn’t hurting anyone or advancing any “gay agenda.” He just wanted to be left alone and I felt sorry for him. But a teacher should have stepped in and stopped it, not some freakin federal program.

Any protection for straight kids, Christian kids or plain ordinary kids?

You mean equal protection of the laws, that kind of stuff? Nah. More “protected classes” stuff.

The Federal government has no legitimate right or interest in making education laws. It is a matter for state and local government to decide.
