The other day, I watched a game of my Tigers v. Cardinals in the 1968 World Series.
One could not miss the well dressed fans. Some long white gloves on the ladies, and almost every man in a brimmed hat, white shirt, tie and many sport coats.

Check out some of the photos from the early and mid-20th Century of attendees at state fairs and the World Fair. Suits and ties (and hats) for the men, dresses and gloves for the ladies. And this was true cross-culturally, cross-racially, and across economic class.
