Stamp honoring Johnny Cash to go on sale Wednesday
Fox News ^ | June 4, 2013

Beginning Wednesday, you’ll be able to put Johnny Cash on all your mail.

A “forever” stamp honoring the country music legend will go on sale, coinciding with the end of a yearlong celebration of the Man in Black’s life and career. A free public concert in Nashville by family and friends of the singer also will honor his six-decade career.

The 46-cent stamp will feature a 1963 image of Cash shot by Frank Bez during the photo session for the album “Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash.”

Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, said the stamp is unusual, and therefore appropriate for his father's legacy.

Slightly off topic, but every time I hear the Carter girls singing back up on a gospel tune, I just smile and think that is what angels must sound like. :)

In his later years he became religious.

He was religious from the beginning.

I think it would be safe to say that he became far more devout in later years but yes, he was a lifelong believer.

My favorite Johnny Cash song was “Life’s Railway to Heaven”

That's an oldie--written in 1890 by The prolific hymn writer Eliza Snow along with Baptist minister M. E. Abbey. Patsy Cline also recorded that tune.

That song was my GGrandpa’s favorite song. It was sung at his funeral. Grandpa Bill as I knew him actually owned his own small railroad.

My Father also had it sung by the choir at his own funeral just a few years ago. Daddy was very fond of his Grandparents.

Check out his version of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus”. It is simple, minimalistic, with just a bit of quiet piano (but WHAT A PIANO) for accompaniment, and as real and heartfelt as any tune I’ve ever heard.

I like “September When it Comes” with his daughter Roseanne. Although he is really sounding worn out in the song, it actually makes the lyrics more poignant.

Due to the dire financial situation of the U.S. Postal Service, and to commemorate the artist, the Cash stamps will only be available for Cash purchases.

Remember these from Johnny? (Sorry if they duplicate any of the ones on the lists posted above.)

(Fiji Hill -- I bet that with all your extensive musical knowledge, you can tell us the history and particulars on that older first song here, "You Are My Sunshine", right?)

I am a fan of his music but it must be noted he was a Democrat. I always thought that is why he was so popular with modern day hipsters. They never much cared for country music Americana and suddenly back in the ‘90s hipsters adopted Johnny Cash. He was an icon with posters, etc. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it in San Francisco. It must be because he had the correct politics.

To be fair, I don't think Cash was a democrat. If he was he kept that VERY quiet, and as a fan I would have definitely known about it. He was friends with multiple presidents of all political stripes.

One thing he was, was American. If you read his backstage riders all he asked for was an American flag on the stage.

Maybe some towels and water, but not much else.

He was never some phony baloney "American" liberal like Kris Kristopherson.
