Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee to retire
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | Tuesday June 4, 2013 | By Encarnacion Pyle and Bill Bush

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee said this afternoon that he plans to retire on July 1, an announcement which followed the latest in a series of verbal gaffes that he said were meant as harmless jokes but ended up embarrassing the university.

The two-time Ohio State president made his announcement this afternoon in an email to students, faculty and staff.

“Without question, the university has achieved remarkable success, and it has been my honor and calling to lead it,” Gee’s email says. “Ohio State is well-positioned for the future. I love this university, and my relationship with it will continue.”

During the meeting, he referred to “those damn Catholics” and joked that priests at Notre Dame are holy on Sunday but “holy hell” the rest of the week. He also suggested that the University of Louisville has poor academic integrity and that those in the Southeastern Conference can’t read or write. He also took jabs at schools, such as the University of Cincinnati, that he said are unworthy of joining the Big Ten.

Throughout his apologies, Gee has maintained that the comments were meant to break the tension and were a “poor attempt at humor” that ended up having the opposite effect.

Only Dems and minorities are allowed to make stupid jokes or remarks. Political correctness is killing this country thanks to the tyranny of diversity and multiculturalism.

Gee is an ivory tower liberal through and through. So, I suppose it’s only right that the rules his ilk has pushed on the universities run him out.

He is a complete ass. He has bashed Catholics, southerners, the Polish, etc. he criticized the Southeastern Conference teams but he wouldn’t do it when he was head of Vanderbilt when it would have meant something. His wife smoked dope often inside of vanderbilt’s chancellor’s mansion which is owned by Vandy. He is a complete asshole and I really wish his signature could be taken off of my diploma.

Oh and he happens to be a “good mormon”

Trying to replace the school’s fight song with the Turtles’ “E. Gordon Gee I Think You’re Swell” didn’t help any.

Gee is obviously an alcoholic whose drinking has caught up with him. Expect to see a press release soon about his entering some "hospital" for treatment of "exhaustion."

So what. I don't care if he is an ass or not. I don't consider what he said to be a reason to be forced to resign. And no matter what you think, he seems to have done quite well in his 33 years as a college president. You usually measure their success by the ability to raise money for the institution.

Gee has led more colleges — West Virginia, the University of Colorado, Ohio State, Brown and Vanderbilt — than any other university president in the United States.

Gee was born and grew up in Vernal, Utah, 171 miles (275 km) east of Salt Lake City, the son of an oil company employee and a school teacher. Raised a Mormon, he served a mission in Germany and Italy. Gee is an Eagle Scout and a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Gee attended the University of Utah and graduated with a B.A. in history in 1968. After earning a J.D. from Columbia University Law School in 1971 and an Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1972, Gee was named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the Supreme Court for one year.

After clerking for Justice Warren Burger, Gee accepted a position as professor and associate dean at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He became dean and professor at West Virginia University’s law school in 1979, and president of the university two years later. As president of a university at age 37, he was one of the youngest chief executives in academia at the time.

After a successful administration at WVU, Gee moved to the University of Colorado in 1985, then to Ohio State University in 1990. At Ohio State, Gee met and married his second wife Constance. He became president of Brown University in 1998.

Time rated Gee the best college president in the U.S. for 2010.
