Jean Stapleton, who was famous for her iconic role of Edith Bunker on All in the Family, passed away on Friday in her New York City home at the age of 90.

Family members have reportedly told the website the actress passed away of natural causes.

Scroll down for video 'It is with great love and heavy hearts that we say farewell to our collective Mother, with a capital M,' said her son and daughter, John Putch and Pamela Putch, in a statement. 'Her devotion to her craft and her family taught us all great life lessons.'

Stapleton won three Emmys for her role opposite Carroll O'Connor's Archie Bunker on the CBS sitcom.

Little known to the public before All In the Family, Stapleton co-starred with Carroll O'Connor in the top-rated CBS sitcom about an unrepentant bigot, the wife he churlishly but fondly called 'Dingbat,' their daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) and liberal son-in-law Mike, aka Meathead (Rob Reiner).

“Boy the way Glen Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade
Guys like us we had it made

Those were the days!

And you know where you were then
Girls were girls and men were men
Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again

Didn’t need no welfare state
Everybody pulled his weight
Gee our old Lasalle ran great

Those were the days!”

Always loved the show theme. RIP Jean Stapleton.

Wasn’t she and Carroll O’Connor both hard-core socialists?

Not sure about Jean. I remember I read once where Rob Reiner said something to the effect that Carrol O'Connor was so far left that he (Rob) looked Conservative by comparison (something along that line)

I swear sometimes I am Archie Bunker.

Thank Goodness, now you'll get an idea who the main stream media is, Jesse Jackson, AlSharpton, Louis Farakhan et. al. shape your thinking.

It’s weird now to realize Jean was only 47 when ‘All in the Family’ started.

Holy cow ... no wonder I never really cared much for All in the Family!! {^) Jean Stapleton being an exception (I thought her Edith was inspired and totally believable). You really nailed it in your post, spot on, exactly true.

Missing verse or two that seldom was played on the air.

Take a little Sunday spin.
Go and watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a Dandy Day that cost you under a fin.

People seemed to be content.
Fifty Dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a Circus Tent.
Those were the days.

Last lines were

Hair was short and skirts were long.
Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong.
Those were the days.

I think that show helped bring on Ronald Reagan in 1980,, the exact opposite of what Norman Lear wanted.. the more wacky left Meathead went over the years the more right the country went...

It was pretty much an equal opportunity offender. I loved the show - it reminded me so much of my own family in Queens. It was well-written and very funny.

By the way, Jean had a long career in musical theatre on Broadway. She was a great talent.

I think too a lot of people forget a character {Edith's cousin Maude in Scranton} who was the Liberal equivalent of Archie. At the end of the series the irresponsible self pleasing Meatheat left wife and kid for a commune IIRC. The so called heartless Archie was raising an adopted child alone after Edith died. In the end he was indeed the hero.

All in the family had some great episodes. One was Archie arguing with The Atheistic Pinko Meathead about creation and the funniest IMO was Edith's change of life.

“Cherie Blair’s father played the Archie Bunker role.”

I never heard that before, very interesting.

“Edith’s cousin Maude in Scranton”

That was Bea Arthur and “Maude” was “spun off” and was also a successful TV show. Of course I never watched it after the controversial episode were Maude had an abortion. yes, that really happened, well really happened fictionally.

Although I did see an episode not that long ago and I was surprised to see that a lot of the show was actually making fun of Maude for her strident and rather silly liberalism.

And of course “The Jeffersons” was also a spin off from All the Family, so they got 3 hit shows altogether. The Jeffersons really holds up comedy-wise I think.

Very good acting on all these shows, I think that’s the most important thing.

It was a great show. And so politically incorrect! I think that’s why we don’t see it on the cable shows as much as we see some others.

“The deconstruction of the Natural Family began with All in the Family.”?????

There are a lot of causes for the deconstruction of the Natural Family. I really don’t think a TV show was one of them.
