Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 29, 2013-- philippic

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

philippic [fi-lip-ik]

hear it pronounced

noun

a bitter or impassioned speech of denunciation; invective

Origin:

1592, "bitter invective discourse," from M.Fr. philippique, from L. orationes Philippicæ, translation of Gk. Philippikoi logoi. The L. phrase was used of the speeches made by Cicero against Marc Antony in 44 and 43 B.C.E.; originally of speeches made in Athens by Demosthenes in 351-341 B.C.E. urging Greeks to unite and fight the rising power of Philip II of Macedon.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

In most places you can get Rush Limbaugh on the AM dial. When that station fades out, hit “scan” and there he is on the next station!

It would be good for someone caught in city traffic or long distance driving but can see why it would not benefit you much, unless you just wanted it! ;^)

Not a philippic speech, but a good recommendation. Just read Robert Crais' book Suspect. ..... .....the book is about a trained Marine dog named Maggie who's handler died while Maggie was wounded in Afghanistan. After her recovery, she is donated to the LAPD where a wounded police officer spots her and wants her for his K-9 partner. They were both scarred and wounded and nearly died. It was fascinating. Some chapters were from Maggie's POV. With a new puppy in the house I enjoyed it.

One tip from the K-9 instructor in the book was to pet the dog from the head to her tail...I tried that and my puppy insisted on getting up on my lap and really responds to the petting. She licks me and gazes up at me when I pet her like that. There must be something to it. The trainer in the books says it's how the mother dog groomed the puppies and they like it. Really worked with my dog.

All in all, he is a great story teller despite the dog tips.

I’ll have to check that out-thanks! I stroke my dog and cats both like that-a vet told me about it when we got our Chow, and we did not want him to become dangerous at home, like guard dog breeds can be without the proper attention and handling.

Her Highness' hubby has been said to be insensitive at times, but not actually Philippic...

By the way-did you catch the 1st show of the new season of Longmire on Monday night? I found out the show is based on a series of mystery/crime novels by the same name, and I love mysteries-now I’ve got to start getting the books...

I don’t think I understand. How else would I pet an animal, tail to head? That really makes the cat mad when you mess up their fur like that.

A++
Not sure if his speeches have been philippic or blasé. I prefer Middleton-of-the-road myself.

I love torts! I was shocked to hear it. My baby was being inducted into the national honor society and while waiting for it to start I saw it on twitter. I hope he gets snapped up quickly.

I always wondered what’s behind those tall windows upstairs.

Probably quite the PennDOT party room.
