Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 29, 2013-- philippic

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

philippic [fi-lip-ik]

hear it pronounced

noun

a bitter or impassioned speech of denunciation; invective

Origin:

1592, "bitter invective discourse," from M.Fr. philippique, from L. orationes Philippicæ, translation of Gk. Philippikoi logoi. The L. phrase was used of the speeches made by Cicero against Marc Antony in 44 and 43 B.C.E.; originally of speeches made in Athens by Demosthenes in 351-341 B.C.E. urging Greeks to unite and fight the rising power of Philip II of Macedon.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

I loaded some music on the car last night. I don’t know how much I’ll actually use the voice command feature, but it is pretty neat to know I can tell the car “play Metallica” and it actually will do it!

It looks like it is going to rain here-

The emperor and his minions
Are on a working vacation-
Every speech is philippic
And adds to the devastation

Any sort of accountability
Seems beyond comprehension-
Their golf games and parties
Are too numerous to mention

That game was played before-
They’re using the same book
That tells about enemies lists
And saying you’re not a crook...

MN-6 is actually more secure for another republican.

I’d expect Cook and the others to move it from lean R to likely R now.

It seemed to me that Michelle B. was dragged into the weeds somehow since the beginning of this year-I found that perplexing, odd for her, and wondered if she had changed advisors...

It would be funny if you could use the words “what I like” and have the car play your songs! lol

You can tag songs stored on the system as “favorites” and have it just play favorites. But with only 700 MB of storage, why would you have songs on there you don’t like?

Ideally, it would use the day and time, assess the tone and stress level in your voice and play the perfect song for that situation.

Well I just have satellite radio on my vehicle - I’m not all fancy like you! lol

I live in the primitive world-only a regular stereo with regular classic rock and country (and one Latino) stations tagged and whatever CD’s and tapes (yes-tapes) I bring with me-and no satellite radio, etc.

My wife was asking about the satellite radio. You get 3 months free with the car. I’m not really interested cause I have a 5 minute commute and there is no need to pay for something that is free.

Especially if I can have 700 MB of my own music at my command.

And it just so happens that James Rosen wrote a book about it.

I’ll just stick with what I have-I don’t have extra money, and I’m used to my favorite stations on the way to work.

Well I love it because we drive a lot - 9 hours to where our daughter used to live - 7 hours to my Mother’s home.... I can alternate between Fox News and seventies music....I dropped it once and made that trip to my Mother’s and it was miserable - searching for CD’s or switching stations on the radio..... blah. I happily renewed right after that.

It would be wasted on me-I never drive anywhere near that long at a time-maybe 25- 30 minutes to work or errands at the most-I don’t drive to the city unless I can’t get something outside of it-and the best Home Depot is only 20 miles away, in a small town anyway.
