Earth may lie in the path of a dangerous gamma-ray burst that could wipe out a quarter of our atmospheric ozone.
Astronomers say that WR 104, a Wolf-Rayet star about 8,000 miles away, could go supernova any day, which would generate gamma-rays that could reach Earth.

I have no idea ... about halfway through watching the play, my mind was overwhelmed by fantasies of hurling various explosive and incendiary devices at the stage, bludgeoning the director, then stalking off to find the author and deal with him in a thoroughly appropriate manner ...
The Moon is on a long string with a big fishing reel type thingy on this end.
The ChiComs control it from a secret base deep within the Gobi Desert.
They roll it out or reel it in for effect.
Art Bell told me so.
Wow...you saw it live?
I just watched the movie.
You have my infinite sympathy.
I should’ve thrown a rock at it, then.

Had to brush my dog “shorty”s teeth this am.
Oooooooh how he hates that, wouldn’t speak to

nice thing about dogs.
I just let mine chew on a dentist.
“Miles? Someone screwed up. That should probably be light years.”
Come’on, this is modern journalism. If spell check doesn’t catch it then it’s fit to print.

I hate it when a dog won’t carry on a conversation.
Great.....we all turn into the Hulk.
‘Could happen at any moment’ in galactic terms means I have little to worry about. Sure, the happening sometime in the next few hundred thousand years is a lot sooner than when they say our sun will go nova but still it’s a long time.
As far as this supposed gamma threat goes, we are at more risk to get wiped out by by a comet, a meteor or our own sun throwing some bad stuff at us.
No biggie. If it happens, even at that distance, it could do damage.

Felllow FReepers, just lean into it if you see it coming, because you’re gonna die anyway! With a little luck, it will hit the opposite side of the planet from us. That way, we’ll have maybe a few days worth of a slow agonizing

‘You would first notice a 10-second blue flash in the upper atmosphere, but then the damage would be done.’
- University of Kansas physicist Adrian Melott
“We could see it go supernova anywhere from tomorrow to 500,000 years from now,” astronomer Grant Hill told Forbes. “For all intents and purposes, the gamma-ray burst and optical photons from the supernova would arrive simultaneously.”
Gamma-ray bursts are triggered by supernovae, or exploding stars.

yes...and the inclination of rotation would HAVE to be zero in order for the burst to hit earth. Can they even measure the inclination that accurately at 8000 LYs?
