Bill Pertwee played air raid warden Hodges, famous for his cry of "Turn That Light Out".
The show was based on the Home Guard, A home defence force made up of mainly the elderly, retired and those not old enough to sign up for active service during World War 2.
R.I.P. Bill Pertwee.
I heard of Dad’s Amery in a Monty Python gag. Michael Palin in a fake upcoming promo says, Next on BBC1, Dad’s Army.
Never saw it. It’s sad now. In the 60’s and 70’s they could still be nostalgic over their victory.
And now there is no more England.
He had a small part in an odd British, sort of horror, sort of fantasy, movie, called “The Death Wheelers”, aka “Psychomania” (1973).
It is an odd little movie, about a British motorcycle gang, kind of laughable by American motorcycle gang standards, led by a spoiled rich young man, and both his mother and he make pacts with the devil, played by George Sanders.
However it had some truly surreal elements that had potential, and if rewritten somewhat could make a tolerably good American version.
Very sad indeed. Bill Pertwee will always be remembered in Britain as Warden Hodges from the classic Dad’s Army, but I was rather fond of a role he took up later in his career, that of Constable Wilson in the 1920s comedy, ‘You Rang M’Lord.’
He was also the cousin of the third incarnation of the Doctor, in ‘Doctor Who’, Jon Pertwee.
The light is finally out. RIP Bill.
There are several Warner Bros. cartoons from the WWII era where “Put out that light!!” is heard.
Sad. I had dinner with him once after a play where my friend Jon Pertwee starred. It was a very fun evening.
Wow. Okay, I know that line from Tweety Bird and possibly other old Looney Tunes cartoons. I had no idea about the origin to it. I used to listen to a lot of Old-Time Radio, but you can't find old-time TV anywhere.
R.I.P. Mr. Pertwee.
I love Britcoms and have seen many but dad’s Army isn’t really well known here. However,I have heard many references made to it that suggest that it was huge in Britain.
I loved Dads Army. It was a strange mixture of being very much pro British, while at the same time taking the piss out of ourselves. Every character was superb. I still remember Cpt Mainwairing’s face when Prvt Walker told him he could get his hands on some black market rifles previously meant for the IRA.
I can only imagine how great that would have been. Jon is my 2nd favorite Doctor. I loved Dad’s Army.
RIP.

No, Don’t know what that was, but it wasn’t Dad’s Army
You’re right. Dad’s Army was a MASSIVE success in Britain, and is regarded as being one of the most beloved ever British comedies. It had a superb cast of actors, and provided entertainment for all the family (something of a rarity these days); from little kids who delighted in some of the physical humor, to older viewers who, with some nostalgia, would have remembered the real Home Guard, right up to Buckingham Palace, where the Royal Family were big fans.
It was a popular show here in Oz as well back in the 70's.I still remember the theme song.
R.I.P. Bill Pertwee
Pike, who foolishly opts to sing a song in which Hitler is called a “twerp” at that very moment (”Whistle while you work, Hitler is a twerp, he’s half barmy, so’s his army...”), finds his name also put on the U-Boat Captain’s List once Mainwaring inadvertently gives it to him (”Don’t tell him, Pike!”).

Classic,
I loved watching Jon Pertwee as Doctor Who. I had no idea he was a WW2 hero. He is missed. :(
Thanks for that, but no, that wasn’t it.
It was the same BBC B&W Globe promo video, with Michael Palin simply saying, “Next on BBC1, Dad’s Army”.
