Does you brother think McCain had anything to do with it?
Or was it ever explained why McCain was transferred to another ship shortly afterwards?

To be fair, McCain was the recipient of a missile...he was just sitting in his plane.
There are plenty of things to blame on McCain, but this really isn’t one of them.

Yes he was but during the 2008 election, some here would bash you if you said such a thing. It is safe again to tell the truth.

There are plenty of things to blame on McCain, but this really isnt one of them. The TV show did a good job breaking down the Forrestal fire.
It was not McCain's fault but if he didn't go around with a cloud of fail perpetually surrounding him this urban myth wouldn't have the legs it does.

I don’t think so. I’m sure he would have said something...

My #9 is an inappropriate reply for this thread. I've asked for it to be removed.
Sorry

To be fair, McCain was the recipient of a missile...he was just sitting in his plane. That is one of the reasons some of McCain's shipmates point the finger at McCain.
They say McCain "wet started" his jet. As I understand it, that is when you flood your engines with fuel and then start it which sends out a plume of flames.
Apparently this was not a totally uncommon practice.
I understand the incident was investigated by the Navy and McCain was absolved of all charges but he was still transferred to another ship afterwards.
Perhaps that was a common practice, too. I don't know. I do know that McCain's father was some Navy hotshot at the time.
Not that that should arouse suspicion or anthing.

You're right about the Mc part, But it was LBJ & McNamara that ordered the navy to use bombs left over from WWII to cover up for a bomb shortage that was embarasing them in the press. For decades the crew of CVA59 have suffered the blame for McNamara's mistake. This wasn't revealed until this book came out a few years ago...... Sailors to the End: The Deadly Fire on the USS Forrestal and the Heroes Who Fought It by Gregory A. Freeman

Wasnt that the disaster McLame started? Yes he [sic] was ...
As much as I dislike McCain, I've never read any report that points a finger at McCain.
What's your source of evidence that McCain started this disaster?

Thanks for that explanation. LBJ and McNamara were the worst but I don’t know if they can out do Obama.

They say McCain "wet started" his jet. As I understand it, that is when you flood your engines with fuel and then start it which sends out a plume of flames. The disaster started when a Zuni rocket onboard an F-4 Phantom parked across the flightdeck accidentally fired. It hit the aircraft parked next to McCain, ruptured a fuel tank and started the fire. McCain's aircraft had nothing at all to do with it.
