As Soderbergh's Liberace biopic hits our screens, why is it that homosexual love stories now work so much better than hetero?
I know where I'll be Sunday night. The reviews coming out of Cannes for Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra, which airs on HBO on Sunday night, have turned it into must-see TV.
We might have been able to guess that Soderbergh's take on the kitsch-addicted superstar would turn out to be "mesmeric, riskily incorrect, outrageously watchable and simply outrageous" (The Guardian). Or that Michael Douglas would be "shrewd, rude, wickedly funny" (Indiewire) in the central role. What is interesting is that the film, which was made for HBO because it was "too gay" for mainstream cinematic release, has turned out to be "both hilarious and heartrending" (The Playlist), an "intimate love story" (Thompson on Hollywood) and Soderbergh's "most emotional and touching work" to date (Hollywood Elsewhere). This is interesting but not surprising, for it only confirms my suspicion that the best love stories, these days the most wrenching, plangent and affecting are gay.
Put it this way: what was the last great straight love story you saw? There are many who swear by The Notebook (2004), although as Hollywood continues to drive the Nicholas Sparks bandwagon into the ground, even Rachel McAdams poked some sly fun in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, where she questioned the sacred Sparksian connection between romance and rain: "What's wonderful about getting wet?" What heresy! Off with her head!

An old man screwing a teenager is a great romance?
I guess Jerry Sandusky’s escapades will one day be referred to with the same fondness as Romeo & Juliet.
Oh, it’s the Guardian. Never mind.
Ping.
Please. You have a bunch of PC Lib critics who are just dying to praise a show about two gay lovers. Some people will tune in because the story line is interesting. But a big chunk of the country either won’t care or will not want to watch to gay men running around kissing each other and in bed together.
Having said that, I’ll probably watch it because I’ve always thought Liberace’s life — especially this period — could be an interesting storyline.
Meh, I dunno. I gave up on the lavender screen long ago.
Can we also get a barf alert on this one.
bump
Unfortunately I saw a promo running on some website off to the side while I was reading something. Disgusting to say the least. Way to go there michelle douglas and matty damon. We also cancelled HBO (but not until after The Sopranos was concluded which was the only reason we got it in the first place) and don’t miss it one bit. Supposedly the matty damon guy is in jail near Reno at this time.
The pictures of Michael Douglas in the trash mags is just plain ghastly. He looks like a corpse. There ain’t no way I’d see that film.
Matt Damon is on a poop strike.
SERIESLY!!

The rumor is that Liberace paid for his young lover to have plastic surgery so that his lover would look exactly like a young Liberace. If you see their pictures, there may be something to the rumor.
Technically, if anyone ever told Liberace to “Go F yourself!”, Liberace could respond, “Thank you, I do.”
Homosexual romance is much like people obsessed with defecation. “Look at my waste! It is lovely waste! See how I squish it in between my fingers!”
“If you do not admire my feces like I do, then you are evil!”
I will confess however, that the demographics of whoever watches a TV production about Liberace’s sex life should be entertaining. I’m thinking a tiny number of homos, a small group of homo critics, and blue haired older women who think that homosexuals are glamorous.”
There is a reason that the TV networks have canceled so many homo shows this season. Ratings. They have none.
Flop coming soon
Some people are going to get the shock of their lives on HBO Sunday night at 9:00 pm eastern time. They will be looking for Game of Thrones and will be treated to this monstrous bastardization of love instead.
