“I’m not racist”: Common claim after racial slurs

It’s almost a cliché. First, someone talking about blacks makes reference to fried chicken, watermelon, monkeys or dogs—or even uses the indefensible N-word. Then, along with the inevitable apology, comes the kicker: I’m not racist.

The latest denial is from golfer Sergio Garcia. Asked a joking question about having dinner with his adversary Tiger Woods, Garcia said: “We will serve fried chicken.” He later apologized for what he called a “silly remark,” then added, “but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.” …

“I think it’s human nature that if you’re a racist, you don’t want to admit it,” says conservative radio host Mike Gallagher.

“If Tiger said, ‘Let’s serve tacos at dinner with Garcia,’ the world would go crazy,” Gallagher said. “When a bigot tells a bigoted joke and they get called out on it, the pattern is, I’ll say I’m sorry and maybe it will blow over.” …

I don't understand the fried chicken bit--was Col. Sanders a black man?

"Watermelon" is code for being a Republican--it means you admire the Secretary of the Treasury for Republican Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover, Andrew Water Mellon.

“I have this maddening desire to go to ChicFilA tonight and I’m white. Does that make me racist?”

No, but it might mark you as a homophobe. ;)

lol. I don't know if they sell anything other than female chickens, but I'd try rooster if it were advertised.

The first meal I have memories of is fried chicken, my momma cooked. High plains, middle of no where. I could even give you the date. June, 1951.

Nothing racist about it.

Lutfisk-Norwegean. (Amen)
Hagas-Scotch. (Amen)
beef-English (Amen)
rice-Japanese (Amen)
rice and beans-Mexico (Amen)

So why is the best food in the world, FRIED CHICKEN, RACIST?
It is the food of the gods, followed by BACON and Steak!

As for WATERMELON, whoever heard of eating cold bananas on a hot day!

Saying “Good Morning, It’s a beautiful day” can somehow be made racially offensive by some people.

Nothing a heavy coating of barbeque sauce won’t cure!

“I’m becoming one” is probably more apt.

Jeez,if anyone goes through any American inner city you'll see all kinds of fried chicken franchises. Popeyes, Church's, Bojangles, KFC, you name it.

Are these franchisees racists? Or are they selling a product that the local residents happen to enjoy?

BTW, I've never seen a Church's chicken in a predominantly white neighborhood.

Not sure why. I think it's very good chicken.

He was probably making a joke about Fuzzy Zoeller.

All this time I never realized that my parents were raising a black child. I grew up eating fried chicken, watermelon, and macaroni and cheese (I hear that this last item is now known as another stereotypical food).

I need to investigate my roots a bit more (and make some up as Alex Haley did if I want to win some awards and television contracts).

Were they secretly tried to make me EYEtalian by serving me pasta, pizza, and soup???
