The Next Generation tried to make the Ferengi (as a characterture of capitalism) to be the main villain of the series in the first season (they failed obviously)
But Deep Space 9 made them one of the best parts of the show.

I loved DS9, I felt it was very unappreciated. IMO The Founders were a far superior foe than the Borg was. They created their own beings for support, they could shapeshift and overtake the highest levels of office and they manage to bring the three major powers of the Alpha and Beta quadrant together.
