CONCORD, N.C. -- Retired stock car driver Dick Trickle, known for his colorful name and short track prowess, died on Thursday from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. He was 71.
According to the Lincoln County, N.C., sheriff's department, the incident occurred at 12:02 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery off Highway 150 in Boger City.
The Lincoln County Communications Center received a call, apparently from Trickle, that "there would be a dead body and it would be his.'' Center workers tried to place a return call to the number but did not get an answer.
Emergency units found the body lying near the victim's pickup truck when they arrived.

RIP, he was one of the colorful fellows who made watching NASCAR so much more entertaining back then than it is now. I have a 1/18 diecast of one of his cars, just for giggles, wished he’d win one, just for the post-race interview.
Morgan Sheppard is about the last of the old timers still running a limited schedule.
Dave Marcis was in his 70s when he finally retired. He wore loafers to drive.
Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle...
What a waste. Suicide is never the answer to suffering.
My favorite interview by him was when Geoff Bodine wanted to be called 'Geoffrey'. He said there were too many 'Jeff's in the garage.
So, Trickle asked the commentator to start calling him 'Richard'. He said there were too many 'Dick's in the garage.
I suspect Trickle got the news he had inoperable lung cancer. As a young teen I watched my grandad die a long slow and very painful death due to lung cancer and he wasn’t a smoker. I can sympathize with mr trickle if that was indeed the case.
Suicide.
