Kyle Love is the latest poster boy to show just how ruthless the business of pro football can be.
Love, who started 11 games for the New England Patriots at defensive tackle last season, was cut by the team Wednesday, two weeks after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
The nature of his departure from the Pats was officially designated as a non-football illness.
Naturally, we are disappointed that the Patriots decided to part ways with Kyle. Especially in light of the fact that a number of elite, professional athletes with diabetes -- both Type 1, which is known to be far more difficult to manage than Type 2 diabetes -- have had very successful careers in professional football, hockey, baseball, and basketball, Love's agent, Richard Kopelman, told ESPNBoston.com.
Kopelman said Love lost weight before the diagnosis but regained most of it after he altered his diet.
Having consulted with leading authorities on the effects of Type 2 diabetes, we have every reason to believe that Kyle will, in the immediate future, be at 100%, and will be prepared to participate in training camp in a couple of months. As Kyle said, There is no way something like this is going to stand between me and a long and successful NFL career.
Love, 26, had 25 starts in 41 career games since making the Pats as an undrafted free agent in 2010.
It’s a shame he’s not queer
Are the lawyers lining up yet?
By golly, I’d be born homo if they cut me.
I foresee a major ADA lawsuit in their near future.
If ex-payers are suing the league for their actions while playing, who can run the risk any longer.
The Patriots should have said that Love was cut because he is too fat, out of shape, and overpaid.
Should have never told the team about the diagnosis.
I’m guessing that would be a contract violation.
But as we know here in FR, a lot of things are not as they seem.
Is Kyle Love a problem of another kind to the Pats and this is just a convenience ?
This is the NFL. Not the Italian Club’s Softball team.
Jay Cutler has Type I diabetes.
Their name is the “Patriots??”
Has the IRS audited them yet?
The ADA will be up in arms —
The Pats may have been trying their best to be nice to him, rather than just say "Kyle's playing lousy, so we booted him."
Robert Kraft is a MORON!!! (he is a hated man in Connecticut, next to Peter Karmanos!)
Sounds very much like a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
IF the NFL doesn’t have a specific pass from Congress.
K .. thanx
They probably ought to change it to "Citizens of the World". That Patriot thing seems a little hateful to me.
He lost 20 pounds in a shockingly short period of time (which is how he found out, apparently)
I understand completely why they cut him, but people will try to make something more out of it.
