PALMDALE (CBSLA.com) — DNA testing was being conducted on several pit bulls Friday after a 63-year-old jogger was mauled to death in the high desert.
The attack happened around 9:30 a.m. Thursday at 116th Street East and Avenue S in Littlerock, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Palmdale Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call about the attack and arrived to find a pack of dogs mauling Pamela Marie Devitt of Littlerock. A deputy fired rounds into the air, causing the dogs to flee into the desert.
Devitt “was dragged 50 yards, scalped and her arm removed. We’ve gotta do something about it; they’re killing machines,” Tony Bell, spokesperson for LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, said.
Devitt died on the way to the hospital.
Authorities later located eight dogs – six pit bulls and two mix breeds – at a residence in the 37300 block of 115th Street, about a quarter mile from the attack, KNX 1070′s Jon Baird reports.
“We got some information from Animal Control and the community that this house has contained pit bulls that have been aggressive in the past,” Lt. John Corina said.
A 29-year-old man was arrested after deputies discovered a marijuana grow on the property. He will not been charged in the attack until DNA testing can prove his dogs mauled Devitt, officials said.
The dogs were taken into custody by the Department of Animal Care and Control.
“They are all housed in individual cages so we are able to hold them safely and securely with out putting anyone in danger,” Director Marcia Mayeda said.
The coroner is working to determine the exact cause of the woman’s death. The dogs could be destroyed if DNA is linked to the animals.
Supervisor Antonovich’s office says this incident points out the need to change state law regarding the aggressive dogs to make communities safer.
“To ask state legislature to allow local government to pass their own ordinances, breed specific if you will. We’re not talking about bans necessarily. We’re talking enhanced enforcement on pit bulls and the owners,” Bell said.

I don’t have a dog in this fight, so to speak because I had had a couple rescue pits 20-25 years ago. Good friendly dogs but they could get a little worked up and rough when wrestling with them.
I firmly believe that the breed of the dog brings with it certain characteristics.
I have a very large (110 lb) 6 year old yellow lab. From a long line of non-working labs (I prefer elk and deer to ducks). I never taught him to retrieve. From day one if I tossed it, he would bring it. All he wants to do is retrieve (and dig holes and each trees). He will play fetch until he drops.
I have a St. Bernard. She follows my kids whenever they go outside and sits with them. She does not play, She just watches them. If someone comes up to the house, she gets between my boys and the visitor. She actually leans into my boys and pushes them back. She will beg to go outside just to sit in the snow for an hour or two.
I also have a very old collie/sheperd mix. He’ll play “fetch” for a few minutes but gets bored. What he does do is herd us, the other dogs and goats. I never taught him to herd the goats. He just does it.
We also have weird little terrier mix. He’s small, fearless and kills every shrew or mouse he can sniff out and dig up. It’s what they do.
All four of my dogs have the natural, noted temperment and traits of their respective breeds. Animal temperment is not something that is made up.
Just makes sure you don’t say anything like that about human beings. LOL

Coyotes and jackrabbits are indigenous to the antelope valley. Pitbulls are not.
38 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2012. Pit bulls contributed to 61% (23) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up less than 5% of the total U.S. dog population.
True story: I saw a pit bull get hit by a car, do a few somersaults, get up, bark at the car and run off.
Seeing any animal get run over is horrifying, for me, but this dang dog was possessed! He** hound is all I could think!
There is a reason why they are the dog of choice in the inner city but seldom found in the burbs.
They are crime deterrents in the inner city but law suits waiting to happen in the burbs.
When are they going to do something about dachshunds?

Sheriff’s deputies carried eight dogs, six of them pit bulls, out of a house in the 37700 block of 115th Street in Littlerock around 5:30 p.m., authorities said.
Four people, two men and two women, were detained at the house by deputies.
The Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control responded to the call of a fatal pit bull attack around 9:30 a.m.

The victim was identified by the L.A. County Coroner’s Office as Pamela Marie Devitt, 63, of Littlerock.
She was out for her morning walk on Avenue 5, between 110th Street East and 113th Street East, when she was attacked, authorities said.
Devitt died while being transported by ambulance to an area hospital.
A woman driving by saw a pack of dogs attacking the victim on the ground, said Lt. John Corina, of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
“She sees a group of dogs and it looks like they’re attacking something,” Corina said. “As she gets closer, she sees it’s a woman face down on the ground.”
The woman honked her horn to try to scare the dogs away, but they turned and attacked her car, biting at the tires, Corina said.

I agree. The Pit Bull breed is basically a dangerous pest. They have as much redeeming value as disease-carrying mosquitoes, fleas, intestinal worms, snake-heads, etc. Wipe the breed out.
And Pit bull owners are invariably ghetto/white-trash losers compensating for their shortcomings with a “macho” dog.
Garbage breed. Garbage owners.
I’m a walker; not a jogger. And CCW one of two 5” Kimber .45cal ACPs, w/ 230gr HPs. Had to shoot a rabid raccoon once, but not any dogs, so far.
