out-dueling is a bit strong, the Rangers were helped by RIDICULOUS officiating! if there is one team with 6+ powerplays and the other team with ZERO in a game where there is no serious puck domination, there is a problem with the officiating. our announcers were saying post game yesterday that it was UNPRECEDENTED. Caps are #1 on the PP, the refs are making sure they don’t get any. The Caps did not play their best yesterday by any stretch, but the officiating in this series has been breathtakingly lopsided. There was one ref in particular they named who did last Weds game as well as yesterday’s and he turned a blind eye to clear Ranger penalties. it is beyond infuriating. The Rangers barely made the playoffs and they are NOT worldbeaters by any stretch, they have had an incredible amount of help in this series. you will NOT hear that on the MSG network, because both xsboy and xshub were in NY watching at various points and the MSG bias was pretty pronounced. One of the first games there was a goal that was reviewed, xshub texted me while waiting for the review “no goal.” i said well Joe Benanoti and Craig Laughlin disagree, they said it’s a clear goal. He said the announcers up here said NO. Well the review came back and of course it was a goal.
Whoa! Are you saying the League has a compelling interest in Game 7 for NYC? ;)
And the NHL is usually noted for its world class officiating. ;-)
Is it really a surprise that home team announcers see things in their home team’s favor?
yes, we think there’s an agenda.
i am saying that it was said that such a penalty disparity was UNPRECEDENTED in the NHL. so however bad they are, they are WORSE this time out.
If the Caps screw up, our announcers say so. And if something is clearly NOT a goal, they don’t say it is. If they think the Caps have gotten a break in not being called for something, they say that. so seeing things in your teams favor is one thing, but painting a diff picture of reality is something else entirely.
Pardon me for getting on the NHL soapbox, but here goes:
I am tired of Detroit I am tired of “Hockeytown” (there are many other cities that can better claim that title) I am tired of the “Red Wings Game of the Week” on NBC.
I am tired of the lack of a real reward for teams who bust their butt to excel during the regular season whether it’s byes, extra home games, or Wins-in-hand during the playoffs, I don’t know.
I am tired of “veiled” preferences to selected teams & markets during the playoffs, e.g. when the refs swallow the whistles.
I have had it with sudden-death overtime where the rule is a pin-ball outcome rather than the exception Play the OT’s to fixed periods i.e. every 10 minutes, the second goal seals it.
I am EXTREMELY tired with being on the outside looking in And this last point IN NO WAY colors my opinions heretofore expressed. ;-)
i hear ya : ) the pundits HATE ovechkin and the Caps and LOVE crosby and the penguins. OV and the Caps have all sorts of room for criticism, but the fellating of the Pens is a bit much to take. Soother will no doubt take issue with that, but i know Hobbes will agree, because i heard about it from him throughout the pens-isles series.
Detroit is “Hockeytown” in the same way the Cowboys are “America’s Team.”
Which is to say it’s marketing hype. Hooey. Hooeytown.
The Penguins have long had better local TV ratings than Detroit, or anyone else. This year they have the highest rating of any hockey, basketball or baseball town.
OK, enough civic boosting.
The refs have always been inconsistent. Things that are penalties in the 1st period are not in the 3rd. Almost nothing is called in OT. It’s always been an obstruct and slash and “let them play” mentality.
I like the idea of rewarding the top teams with more than just 4-3 home ice in the first round.
I don’t like the idea of changing from sudden death. That’s one of the best things going for the sport.
I don’t pay attention to anything any of the network guys say. I like to watch the games on my DVR. I start about 1.5 hours into the game and can then watch it while FF’ing through commercials and intermissions, etc. I sure don’t sit there watching “analysis.”
That said, the Penguins are an amazing collection of players right now. They added two players that were their teams’ captains this spring. It’s surely something to talk about.
When Crosby plows through two defensemen for a statuesque goal, it’s worth talking about.
I’d venture to say that the Western New York region is just as much “Hockeytown” as Detroit and environs; or maybe they should give Windsor, Ontario that title Hype & hooey, yeah, but who really cares to have it beaten over your head every Sunday? </homer>
RE the OT, it is quite exciting, and not like each team doesn’t know what they’re in for when they get into that situation I dunno, just been a bugaboo of mine to have an entire season come down to one shot or a referee’s call — maybe they should do the fixed time thing if it’s a Game 7, a la Wimbledon deuce matches.
It’s a hell of a lot better than deciding a World Cup in soccer based on a shootout! At least you lose while playing the sport you’ve been playing all year long.
NBC and the NHL try to pick games that they can hype and get the highest ratings for. Toronto playing Boston might be a great game, but the fact that half the fans aren’t in this country DQs it.
Shootouts to decide a hockey game were a half-assed idea that was a mistake to bring into the game, even during the regular season. It’s like having a home run derby decide a baseball game that lasts too long. But “fans” love it....
