A Northville mother is upset about the unedited version of "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" that her seventh grade student is reading in school.
According to an article on myfoxdetroit.com, parent Gail Horalek filed a formal complaint with the Northville school district about a passage in the book that she thinks is too graphic for students that age.
In the passage, Anne Frank discusses the discovery of her genitalia.

Having seen the word “bullshit” so many times this morning on FR, it sure seems that we are adopting the language and lack of social conservatism of Democratic Underground.
I don’t swear much at all, but when I get fired up, it tends to flow. This morning’s been a rough one for me.
LOL.
What? I saw the Exorcist when it came out AND read the book and I was only ten years old.
I read Anne Frank’s diary many years ago and I don’t remember anything too offensive, except of course them rounding up Jews to send to their deaths. Apparently, she’s OK with that part.
And it keeps getting funnier, every single time I see it.
Maybe some of the people buying books for schools don’t even know that there are two different versions.
In my day, the purpose of reading it was to learn about the Holocaust. Today, with teachers steeped in Marxist-Feminist theory in vollege, classic literature is being repurposed to be a vehicle for normalizing homosexuality.
Nowadays they teach that Republicans were responsible for The Holocaust.
Reminds me of “Huckleberry Finn”. Are we going to remove every great book because something in it offends somebody?
I have read the “unedited” version of Anne Frank’s diary.
Yes it is sexual in nature, a little raw. However it is not pornagraphic. Kinda reminds me of “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” just not so raunchy.
I know that more and more I click on the direct link to articles rather than to the freerepublic threads because I get tired of all the cussing when I’m trying to read and think, even in the religion threads it is all over the place.
If you feel even slightly inclined to do so, feel free to click the “Report Abuse” link under my post. I have no problem accepting responsibility for my actions.
For what it’s worth, I do the opposite of you. I read the FR thread to get the visceral feeling from other conservatives on these issues. Swearing in excess is a sign of ignorance. Swearing to make a point is utilitarian, because it’s designed to evoke a response, which I apparently did in you.
“... two different versions”.
I thought there was only one so I was surprised at the discussion of it. From my understanding, the two versions are really different. The unedited is more mature.
At least it wasn’t the unedited Diary Of Barney Frank.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
We have seen liberals use that response since the 1960s, they say it with pride, as though it justifies all the deconstruction of our culture and public space as skill and expertise and effectiveness rather than as just tacky and shallow, and seen as shocking by America before the left took over in recent decades.
Now it is used to make the social conservative forum freerepublic more like the socially liberal DU, just as it has been used to move all of the public space in that direction, for almost 50 years.
My step grandfather was a Jewish man who had friends who were involved with the publishing of the book.
He told my father that the book was edited.
The editing had to do with the natural desires of young girls.
For pete’s sake, most girls are attracted to girls when young. What was once a phase has become a life choice
I personally do not have an issue separating my secular life from my spiritual one. If you are offended by comments, and you make it a habit of reading just the article, may I suggest you click on the link to the article from the forum page instead of opening the thread itself?
Guarantee there’s nothing in there about touching another female’s parts.
Okay... I finally found what the huge brew haha was about. I knew some of the content via discussion with my daughter but finally found the book. Here is the main paragraph as to why many of the 12/13 year old girls thought about possible bisexuality: (page 130, paragraph four)
“I already had these kinds of feelings subconsciously before I came here, because I remember that once when I slept with a girl friend I had a strong desire to kiss her, and that I did do so. I could not help being terribly inquisitive over her body, for she had always kept it hidden from me. I asked her whether, as a proof of our friendship, we should feel one another’s breasts, but she refused. I go into ecstasies every time I see the naked figure of a woman, such as Venus, for example. I strikes me as so wonderful and exquisite that I have difficulty in stopping the tears rolling down my cheeks. If only I had a girl friend!”
** IMHO, her honors English teacher should have simply explained that this is the writings of a young girl, trapped in an attic... and simply expressing her thoughts. The novel, author and simple education was ignored by simply not putting that info out there for the class.
