When I look at those figures, it makes me sick...to realize that even the lowest-ranking, dumbest congress critter makes nearly twice as the best paying position on the chart.

They are. I have two sons with engineering degrees and their starting salaries were in line with these, given when they started.
What is surprising is that they do not list Civil Engineering. A lot of C.E. work goes to support petroleum infrastructure, and even absent that, a BSCE will get you a starting salary higher than that of BSAE.

When I was selecting a major in college (1960s), I expressed an interest in petroleum engineering. My adviser told me in no uncertain terms that it was a dead-end job with no openings. Someone would have to die for there to be an opening.
From the chart, I suppose there were a lot of old engineers who died or I picked the wrong field.
