I don’t think any team in any other sport can ever hope to win the Stanley Cup. ;-)
Actually, that’s not true. The ‘H’ does not stand for ‘Habs’ or Habitants. This misconception stems from an error by an English language newspaper reporter in the 1950s. It actually stands for ‘Hockey’, as in ‘Club de Hockey Canadien’, the official name of the team.
According to NHL.com, the first man to refer to the team as “the Habs” was American Tex Rickard, owner of Madison Square Garden, in 1924. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the “H” on the Canadiens’ sweaters was for “Habitants.”
Seriously, I appreciate that. I do remember that, too.
LOL! I realized my phrasing was wide open to remarks like that right after I posted it.
RED WINGS GOIN' FOR #12
Yeah—I meant their sport’s highest trophy—World Series, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, or World Cup. Whatever.
Inhabitant in English.
Doesnt quite have the same charm.
So, the Redskins and the Braves get attacked for taking pride in the character of their namesakes, while “Inhabitant” slips past their wisdom.
Israel should start a sports team called the “HABS”
Wow,
What’s real or what’s for sale.
A reporter in the 1950’s made an error.
That error has roots to someone named “TEX” from the 1920’s.
The owner of MSG was named “TEX?”
An English language reporter in the 1950’s somehow picked up the meme that, incorrectly began in the 1920’s.
So, what where the Canadians called for the 30 years in between ?
That jersey should read “BUTTFUGGINUGLY”!
Screw the NHL! The Sabres had a rather heated news conference today and of course they are rebuilding (both the Sabres and the Bills need to change the team names to the Rebuilders or “Wait Until Next Year”).
They are keeping the completely useless Darcy Regier as general manager. He has been the architect of this excessively mediocre club.
Fear not though, even though they are keeping the GM, with such proven lack of skills, they are raising the ticket prices.
So we get to pay more for the same mediocrity. Not Me! DONE!
Airborne...you are a most gracious thread originator...patiently allowing the fans of “those other” hockey teams have their fun up thread...
WE KNOW where the Cup will spend the summer ;)
Lets. Go. Pens!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess they were called “Les Canadiens.”
Terry Gregson absolutely screwed the Sabres in ‘99. That was brutal.
The New York Yankees have played well in excess of 10,000 games, and have never won a Stanley Cup.
Actually, the C/H logo goes back to the early days of the team, when they first adopted their name as the Club de Hockey Canadien — i.e., the Canadiens Hockey Club.
Oops — you beat me to it!

I’ll second that emotion.
