Two men became the new proud owners of a rare 1913 Liberty Head nickel, which was hidden in a closet for 41 years after its owners were mistakenly told it was fake.
Larry Lee, 63, from Panama City, Fla., and Jeff Garrett, 54, from Lexington, Ky., paid $3,172,500 for the coin from Heritage Auctions in Schaumburg, Ill., on Thursday.
I love rare coins, Lee told ABCNews.com. For anyone connected to coins, this is like a dream come true. Lee and Garrett bought the coin in partnership.
Garrett, who was one of a team of experts brought in to authenticate the coin in 2003, said hed been excited about the coin ever since he first handled it.
Weve both always dreamed about owning these coins, he said. This is probably the greatest coin Ive ever handled. While five Liberty Head nickels are currently known to exist, the story of this particular coin added a new dimension to its allure for Lee and Garrett.
The coins former owner, George Walton, died in a car accident in 1962. His family recovered the nickel from the car wreck but was told that the coin was counterfeit. Waltons sister kept the coin anyway, stowing it away in a closet with the label Its not real.

If I had a nickel for every nickel I had that was only worth 5 cents, I’d have exactly as much money as i do now...
Who told them it was fake?
The bald guy at Pawn Stars?
“I know its worth 3 Million, but I can only give you $400 dollars. I don’t get many people in here looking for this item”
Today is my 48th birthday. Couple of weeks ago my wife was asking me what I wanted. I told her I wanted three Pfennige (from the old Deutsch Mark days) for my pocket.
Then for days she was stalking me - asking what else I wanted. I told her the Pfennige need to be lucky. That at least kept her busy thinking about.
Four million would be lucky! But really, I just like and miss Pfennige. :)

I miss the "Heuermann" (sailor slang for DM5 coin, because it was the traditional up-front "Handgeld" for a seaman who agreed to hire onto a ship). Had a nice, substantial feel to it, and was worth something back in the day (even though it had a plastic center and was composed only of base metals).
But be patient, and you may yet get your wish, if you know what I mean!
Regards,
I’ve had one of those in my desk drawer in a small jar for 25 years. I’m going to have to take a closure look at it.
Gute Wünschen zum Geburtstag!
Hallo Alexander,
I refuse to click through. I hate these stories where some older person sells something for peanuts at a garage sale and it turns out to be valuable. Hate! If i recall, an original Declaration of Independence was hidden behind a picture frame and sold at a yard sale. That’s all i know because i didn’t read the rest of the story. Lol.
Vielen lieben Dank Yaelle!
Ich wünsche ein schönes Wochenende!
Yeah, I'm sure one will be given to me as change at the supermarket any day now.
My local post office once had a stamp vending machine. When I used it to buy stamps, one of the coins it gave me in change was a buffalo nickel. I looked up how much it was worth. A lousy 2 bucks. Thats as close as I've ever gotten to a rare coin.
I don't like that guy.
I don’t like that woman.
He may be annoying on his show, but have you ever read his book or learned his life story? He is big time conservative and Mark Levin had him on a few weeks back. It was quite interesting.
When I visit with my 90 year old Dad, he tends to have that show on so I know what you mean about Rick. But hearing his story shed a whole new light on him, for me.
Thanks for the heads up. Going by his persona on that show, he annoys me, but I’m always willing to admit I’m wrong. Funny, I was just looking at your posts a few minutes ago about Beck. I’m not a fan of his either. Now tell me all the good things I need to know about him too. ;)
You didn’t stick up for Hillary! ;)
