Advice on Brit detective series....

Posted on 04/26/2013 8:49:59 PM PDT by Mountain Mary

Okay, I'm normally a political and news poster..but am searching for some new BBC shows to addict myself to post Downton Abbey. Hoping Freepers can help. There was a thread about this a while back.

After realizing that the Brits are light years better than us for turning out watchable, absorbing and well acted, directed and produced "who dunnits", and as I am on a political sabbatical for obvious reasons..

Here's my completed viewing list over the last three months: 1. Prime Suspect: Helen Mirren 2. Foley's War: all except the new ones that aren't out yet. 3. George Gently...Seasons 1-4.

I am currently addicted to the latter, especially seeing as Lee Ingleby as Sargeant John Bacchus is the best(and yummiest) actor EVER...and the chemistry between him and Martin Shaw as DCI Gently is priceless. Similar is interaction between Michael Kitchen as DCI Christopher Foley and his driver, Sam Stuart played by Honeysuckle Weeks in Foyle's War.

Give Vera a look, Inspector Lynley, Wycliffe, eary Taggart, Blue Murder, Dalziel and Pascoe, Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Death in Paradise, Silent Witness, A Touch of Frost, Rebus, New Tricks, Waking the Dead. You have to know about Cracker, Lewis and Midsommer murders. Not sure if they are all available on Amazon or Netflix. Anything can be “found”. Take it back. I’ve only found season 5 of George Gently.

The Bletchley Circle was supposed to start airing on PBS on April 21st. I've already seen it and it's very good. A second season is planned.

Wallander is dark and uncomfortable at times but extremely good.

Oops - I had not seen your “gritty’ comment - that rules out Larkrise and Cranford - they are not gritty - but another vote for the British Sherlock - and certainly MI 5 (although I do get irritated with their political slat at times).

I really enjoy “Midsomer Murders”, “Waking The Dead”, “Blue Murder”, and “Cadfael” series. For non streaming series I have lately gotten hooked on “Justified”.

Netflix has seasons 1-4 of George Gently. Did you mean you haven’t found season 5?

Garrow's Law is also very good if you like period dramas. Each episode is drawn from Barrister William Garrow's actual 18th-century cases.

As well Blue Murder with Caroline Quentin, who also stars in previously the mentioned Jonathan Creek mysteries. Both programs are available from Netflix.

Darker, no comedy? Definitely try:

Vera

DCI Banks

Sandbaggers (if you feel like a foray into espionage)

“although I do get irritated with their political slat at times”

MI5 irritated me as well....makes you wonder why we call them allies.....lol

But, taken in context they are no worse than CSI or some of the others here. They all seem to dislike Americans. One who thinks their doodoo does not smell, and the other wants to smell just like their European critics..and not stupid Americans..who they must endure.

I’ve gotten so much rich material from all of you that I’ll be busy for a long time, SD. But I will google British drama later.

I’m really stuck on George Gently right now. The plots aren’t why. The perps give up way too easily and the Brits don’t like guns..or for that matter, America. It’s the acting, the dialog, and the way Shaw and Ingleby compliment one another.

Been so busy being a conservative activist for the past 15 years (and look what all of our efforts got us anyway. As Chris Farley would say, “JACK SQUAT”.) UK has a treasure trove that trumps our prime time trailor trash any day. And I love streaming cuz I can take my laptop to bed with me at night. :-)

Durham County.

The scene in the woods with the two girls put me off it permanently, besides it's Canadian. I forgot the Ghost Squad in my previous post.

Cadfael is excellent. It got me interested in reading medieval mysteries.

Yes, I watched Gently 1-4 on Netflix and that’s all they have. Season 5 has been out for a while so I don’t know why they don’t have it.
or 6..I’ll call ‘em tomorrow and ask.

Ordered 5 from Amazon..but would rather just stream it.
