I am totally clueless aboout this, but last week I got an invitation to the promotion and party for my cousin, who is being promoted to Colonel.
She has worked very hard for this and made so many sacrifices and is so dedicated, I would really like to give her something special not just for this accomplishment, but also because she has included me, and because she is working for me and my family. She has not asked for gifts and I know she never will, because she is like all of our brave military, and is proud to serve her country, and is thankful for the opportunities it has given her.
So my question is for events like this, do attendees give gifts? If so, what kind of gifts? What would have meaning? I was thinking about some kind of donation in her honor, but only if that is acceptable for this occasion. I just don't have a clue, and I'm wondering if the military was of doing this is different.
Make a nice donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in her name. I’m sure she would appreciate that.

My Nephew made light colonel about a year ago. I don’t recall any of us doing anything except saying “he sure did make it quickly”. I would not be at all surprised if he makes General eventually.
Thanks, and those are good ideas, but those look like something her staff or close family would give her. I wouldn’t want to mess with a tradition...want to make sure I do this right. I’m going to give that page a thorough look. Thanks!
- Framed/matted reprint of the US Constitution
- A desk plaque with the officer’s oath engraved on it
- Desk size statue or bust of George Washington
- If they are an academy grad, a gift of something that's specific to whichever academy they attended
- If she's a flyer, a mini version of the appropriate aircraft
If you need more ideas, let me know
My anti-virus goes to Defcon I at that site.
I’m clueless as to what a promotion party is...
I got my Blood Stripes “pinned on” by my fellow Company NCOs, when I made Corporal. Brutal and painful, it was worth it.
When I made Sergeant, I was “wetted down” at the NCO Club.
For what it’s worth, my gift was a 5AM, 3 mile run, with one helluva hangover.
Cheers!
Cool stuff, thanks!
She is Army, something to do with Nuclear Ops, and due to weird timing has seen very little combat. She often says she has patch envy. I like the idea of the officer’s oath. Do you think she’ll get alot of stuff like that?
LOL, I love military humor. :)
$46 Billion to stop this year’s Sequestration cuts.
I forgot to mention picking up the $250 NCO Club tab.

Congrats to your cousin!
I also like the donation to wounded warrior foundation suggestion
Since my daughter is EOD I’ll mention:

A real silver dollar ( in private ) and a smile of gratitude and recognition.

What’s your second suggestion? :)
The custom for officers is to host their own “wetting down” party to celebrate a promotion...including buying the food & drink.
Do like the idea of Wounded Warrior donation, or to make it even more personal, maybe a contribution to your cousin’s unit / base Family Services office or Morale, Welfare, & Recreation (MWR) fund. Alternatively, a donation to her Service’s Relief Fund — Army / Navy / Marine Corps / Air Force Relief. Or even a contribution to a local or the main USO office.
Wow, some of those shirts are amazing!
I already donate monthly to WWP, so I guess I could consider giving an extra gift in her honor. I think she might appreciate a gift to the USO also.
Interesting.....is there any special significance to the silver dollar? I like that special moment. She means the world to me, and I really want her to know that.
Sounds good!
