The couple's grandson took Adolf, who is thought to be at least 100 years old, indoors but for the following month the reptile showed no sign of life.

We have a large semi-aquatic turtle. (Nasty thing. Our daughter brought it home from a friends house when she was 5. She's now in her 20's).
It hibernates during the winter. I don't know what kind of turtle Adolf was, or if it would hibernate, but maybe that's what happened?

Cold turtles and tortoises hibernate, they are reptiles.
