Question about Obama phones (vanity, privacy)
Me | 4/6/13 | Me

First, I will assume that everyone here knows that your smart phone has a camera, a microphone, and a GPS system built in.

Software running on the phone is capable of enabling/disabling those functions, gathering data from them and transmitting the data over wifi/cell connection to whomever wrote the software.

Clearly the technology is in place for a wonderfully efficient personal espionage system.

Further, we live in a culture in which normally honest people commonly break the law using technology because it’s easy to do (e.g. downloading music for free, thus stealing from artists).

So:

1. I wonder if the government is passing out free Obama phones in exchange for data acquisition (the Google business model), and

2. Does anyone know the circumstances that would make it legal these days for a government agent to tap into a citizen’s “private” smart phone?

You could always turn the phone off or leave it elsewhere for private conversations.

It’s just part of living in our society today and has nothing to do with Obama.

If you don’t want anyone tracking you or listening in or tracing text messages - then when you go out somewhere - just leave your phone at home ... LOL ... it’s that simple.

If you’re really paranoid, just get those one-use phones and throw them away when you use them once. Big deal!

Buy a throw-away phone, and then leave your normal phone somewhere else - where you’re not ... :-)

Leaving it elsewhere would be the best option. But, if you never wanted it repeated, never say it. Turning the phone is no guarantee it’s not “active”.

If they do any tracking of the sheep who have been provided phones, it will be to see who is closest to an area where they need someone to throw a brick through a window or some such antic - the phone will ring and some Obama-sounding voice will tell them their president needs them...

Wrapping it in tinfoil would be a pretty good guarantee ... :-) ... and you could also take out the battery.

[ ... no, really, it would work! ]

We have a client in the african american community who owns several businesses. The most profitable one - he buys phones from people when they upgrade for cash and resells them in the AA community to those who don’t have the credit rating to get a cool phone. The purchasers can then have them activated or added under the Obama phone plan. He will also buy your upgrade if you just want to keep your old phone and take the cash. Its strictly a cash business.

I don’ t understand how people who have no employment, no credit and are living entirely on benefits think its smart to pay $600 for a phone.

Interesting.

I know all the workers at the local Burger King have better phones than me. Newer cars, too.

if the government paid for your phone it belongs to them, they just let you use it...

There are several million nobama phones in service. And the government didn't pay for a single one. Doesn't pay for the monthly service either.
