There are at least two other locations in the Middle East that are purported to be the entrance (or exit) to Hades, or “the Abyss”. One is in the caverns of Caesarea Philippi in northern Israel at Banias, and the other is on Temple Mount in Jerusalem. According to legend, when the builders of the first Temple tried to remove the rock that seals the entrance, the shrieking of the damned was heard, and the stone was quickly replaced. This place is now located under the Dome of the Rock.
Only the eunuchs of Cybele, an ancient fertility goddess, were able to enter the “gate to hell” unscathed, according to mythology.
