The ratings have spoken and theyre telling television producers that a six-hour, $20 million miniseries on Jesus of Nazareth will prove as great a success as the recent History channel production The Bible.
We believe the audience continues to have a hunger for life- and faith-affirming films, said Michael Landon Jr., who is writing and producing the Jesus of Nazareth series with Brian Bird for Brad Krevoys MPCA, the Hollywood Reporter says. The monumental success of Mark Burnett and Roma Downeys The Bible just underscores that.
Showtime is trying to cash in on spiritual fever, too, with The Vatican, under development now, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Also in the pipeline or currently playing: Lifetimes reality show, Preacher's Daughters, and GSNs Bible-based theme game show.
Mr. Krevoy said hes still awaiting a U.S. network agreement to air Jesus of Nazareth, but he is confident in an offer.

Perhaps this next mini series will actually remain true to the Bible instead of creating their own script & version.

There was a movie made in the 1970's entitled JESUS OF NAZARETH.
It was a 1977 British-Italian television miniseries co-written (with Anthony Burgess and Suso Cecchi d'Amico) and directed by Franco Zeffirelli which dramatizes the birth, life, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus largely according the Christian Bible's New Testament Gospels.
It stars Robert Powell as Jesus. The miniseries features an all star cast of famous American and European actors, including seven Oscar winners (Christopher Plummer, Anne Bancroft, Rod Steiger, Lawrence Olivier, Earnest Borgnine, Peter Ustinov and Anthony Quinn).

I love that mini series. The music and acting is excellent. I have it on DVD and watch it every Easter.

I’ve owned it twice in VHS. Still watch bits of it on Youtube from time-to-time. One of the best of that genre.

I really hope they try to do this thing right. It would be wonderful to see the Christian faith respected for a change.
Unfortunately, I can see the typical casting of a black, a Hispanic, an Asian, a gay guy, and a loud mouthed feminist who is always proven right subbing for Peter, Andrew, Thomas, Matthew, and John. There will be no healing of the lame because we have to respect the handicapped, and they will get a white male Tea Party ringer to play Judas.
That's what I've come to expect from Hollywood. They sometimes respect the Old Testament because of Judaism, but the New Testament and Jesus Christ is a whole different matter.

The Jesus has blue eyes on that poster which of course is most likely historically inaccurate seeing as how Jesus was Hebrew / Palestinian.

Some good could come of these series; some watching for the historical drama might be encouraged to seek further.

RE: The Jesus has blue eyes on that poster which of course is most likely historically inaccurate seeing as how Jesus was Hebrew / Palestinian.
Well, in the Bible miniseries, Samson and his mother were both BLACK.
It didn’t know that African Israelites existed that far back. And since they did not show Samson’s father, the film maker probably wants us to think that he married an African woman.
