The Bible: TV series gets audience of biblical proportions in US

The television drama series based on the Bible and shown on the History Channel has amazed critics by garnering huge viewing figures across America and becoming the most surprising television hit of the year.

Defying expectations that a simple retelling of Bible stories, including those of Adam and Eve, and Samson and Delilah, would not appeal to a modern audience, the 10-hour series has been making headlines and had more than 13 million viewers for its first episode.

The Bible has consistently been the top-rated cable television programme on Sunday nights, and some reports estimate that 50million people have watched at least part of one episode.

Experts say television stations ignore audiences interested in religion at their peril: with Christian bloggers and churches able to spread the word about programmes, they can bring massive ratings compared with mainstream fare.

Jason Mittell, a media professor at Vermont’s Middlebury College, said: “It’s a mainstream subculture that often gets ignored. There’s a whole alternative media sphere of Christian blogs and media and broadcasting that can be utilised to generate buzz.”

We’re watching it now. LOVE the scene with Matthew at the Temple. Made tears well up in my eyes.

Oh, me too. That was beautifully done.

Did anyone else notice Satan had a return appearance last night?

And did anyone else also notice the Prince of Darkness still looked like our pResident? Still just a coincidence, I’m sure.

some reports estimate that 50million people have watched at least part of one episode.

That makes sense since the country is split down the middle politically. around 115 million vote and 1/2 vote Republican so this makes sense to me. But keep in mind, NCIS gets 20 million viewers a week. The Bible received 13 million its first week and has NEVER been able to repeat those numbers at all.

Is NCIS a cable show, like The Bible? 13 million viewers is very good, as not everyone has cable.

I’ve started watching the show. I’ve recorded them but haven’t watched them until now. The show is ok, kind of a quick skim of the Bible.

I just hope more Christian shows will come forward now and help spread the message and give people alternatives to all the vile garbage that’s on TV.

I love them. I have some minor criticisms, like last night when Jesus told Peter that he would deny Him before dawn, instead of before the cock crows 3 times. I don’t know why they had to change the verbage on that. But I’m tickled that its ratings are doing so well.

I THINK (underscore think) that I have a deal to fund the theatrical version, but we are still looking for money to do a six part TV series.
