I've always been interested in movies in which the main characters were upstaged by another character. One such movie as an example was "Giant" in which James Dean as Jett Rink completely overshadowed Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor as Bick and Leslie Benedict.
Rarely has a movie been so completely stolen by a character. While Hudson and Taylor had scenes together that bordered on producing yawns, Jett Rink completely fascinated the viewer. Even when Rink waved his hand goodbye, he did it in such a way that the viewers found riveting. Also fascinating was the transformation of the older Rink into a mean drunk. Another thing is that James Dean at least made the effort to sound like a Texan which Rock Hudson was apparently unable to do which is another reason why his Bick Benedict character was unconvincing.
The show was called 'Miss Panda & Mr Hedgehog' and it was not very good except for that very minor character played by Oh Yi-Na.
"What you talkin' 'bout Willis?"
Smokey and the Bandit. Jackie Gleason stole it everytime he was on screen.
“I’m goona go home and slap your mother cause there ain’t no way you come from my loins”
“The singing miniature twins steal the show from Mothra. Thats why Godzilla refused to be in any scene with them.”
I heard different. It was the twins that refused to be in any scenes with Godzilla because they were snobbish nightclub stars on the rise, and they considered Godzilla to be a low rent actor doing these drive in schlock films, and so was beneath their station. Little did they know that in his earlier years, Godzilla did Shakespeare in the round for 75 seasons in a row.
Bick, you shoulda shot that fella a long time ago. Now he's too rich to kill.
From what I read all the adults upstaged the kid in that movie. It was supposed to be a coming of age story centered around Danny but turned into an ensemble of wacky characters movie.
And his poetry! (tears welling up now)
Poor, frumpy Renee Zellweger danced up a storm in Chicago but everyone was watching Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Julie Christie over Warren Beatty in Shampoo.
Bump for Doc.
Almost ANY movie in which Gary Oldman appears.
The Professional
Air Force One
..just to name a few...
“I’m your huckleberry.”
Her line "I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin no babies" ranks up there with Rhett's "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn," and Scarlett's "I'll thinnk about that tomorrow."
Toy Story
Hands down amen!
I’m thinking Renee Zellweiger stole just about every scene she was in with Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain.
Kevin Spacey in Seven.
Perhaps it has more to do with the character of The Joker, than the performance? Or, that character allows an actor a great deal of leeway in being “over the top” with his acting.
Matthew Broderick upstaged Godzilla in 1998.
