The civil rights group ColorOfChange would like to see Cops put behind bars.
ColorOfChange has asked Fox not to renew its unscripted law-enforcement show and is calling upon advertisers to withdraw support, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. On Wednesday morning, the group is sending supporters an email in which it asks them to sign a petition to that effect.
"Although marketed as unbiased, Cops actually offers a highly filtered version of crime and the criminal justice system a 'reality' where the police are always competent, crime-solving heroes and where the bad boys always get caught," the email reads in part. It goes on to charge Cops and shows like it with over-representing whites as police officers and under-representing minorities as authority figures. According to ColorOfChange, Cops glosses over issues such as police misconduct and broadcasts "dehumanizing portrayals" of suspects.
In its criticism of Cops, ColorOfChange points to research it says media representations such as those on Cops can lead to stigmatization of black men. "Against the real-world backdrop of an American culture that views young men like Trayvon Martin and Jordan Russell Davis with suspicion," the email continues, "the stakes couldn't be higher."

Columbus, OH had a program of setting out bait cars to catch car thieves. When the perp tried to hot wire the car the doors locked and the stereo started playing the Cops! theme as the police ran up. I'm sure there are still some of the videos from the hidden camera on Youtube.
I guess the truth is painful.
I’d like to see a few episodes of
Cops: The ones that got away.
I’m sure there are plenty of screwups where the perps were able to outsmart, outrun, or otherwise avoid the police. Be fun to occassionally see that.
It would also be more interesting (I think) for them to follow up each segment with the results. Was there a conviction or a plea bargain? What was the time served? Etc.

Apparently ‘they’ have never seen the “Cops” shows that feature the Pittsburgh PA Narcotics detachment. Definitely it is hard to tell the players without a scorecard.
They are ‘holding off’ the issues such as ‘dehumanizing portrayals’ until the show “Felons” is launched.
In that one the “Felon” is portrayed as the hero etc...
Starting with “The Shield” which had Michael Chiklis(sp) shedding his ‘Liberal White Bread Cop’ image from “The Commish” most of your new cop/hero shows are BAD GUYS, who you actually start ‘pulling for’....Tony Soprano, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, Justified is (border line), Banshee to name a few....
Absolutely, just ask the prince of darkness:
Any comment from “ColorofHope”?
Did they send a similar email to encourage the cancellation of Jerry Springer and Maury Povich, who in my opinion has done far more damage to the impression one is to get about black people - trashy, unemployable, ignorant and mouthy.
About 15-20 years ago in Grand Rapids, MI, the black neighborhoods complained that the cops were racist, because they seemed to be arresting mostly blacks in the city and were targeting high crime (mostly black) neighborhoods.
So the cops backed off I guess, because a couple years later, the black neighborhoods complained that the cops were racist, because they were not coming into the high crime (mostly black)city neighborhoods and protecting them from the criminals.
Sometimes the cops just can’t win.
The truth is ugly sometimes, and some people just can’t accept it.
My kids are 26 and 21 years old. But when they were little rug rats I would have them watch episodes of ‘Cops’. They couldn’t understand it all of course, but it began an education for them early on about the ugly realities of low-life ghetto dwellers and what they do and how they live.
I loved, nurtured and raised my kids in a healthy wholseome envoronment. But even small kids know there is a dark side of life. And ‘Cops’ helped educate them in a positive way.

Watch and listen to any of the early Jersey City shows. “You think you’re tough? We’ll get rid of these cameras and see how tough you are.” I knew that guy too.
And there it is. Video evidence of the preponderance of black men committing crimes is something that the racists at ColorOfChange can't tolerate being broadcast on a nationally syndicated show.
Well....too bad. The truth hurts sometimes doesn't it?
i watch that too... those investigators are not mostly white... a good mix of ethnicities... the perps are almost always black... and so are the victims... and the crimes are often drug-related... what can you do if that's the way it is, right?
Yep. In general, stereotypes exist for a reason.
Shows like Cops may be biased but try showing the LEOs as thugs and see how much cooperation comes from the various departments.
Do those shirts come with sweat and beer stains or do those have to be added?
Truth is not a defense to the new definition of “racism”. The First Amendment will have to be changed in the new multicultural America.
AND never asks for an attorney! That is the part that amazes me... I think this is why the Stupid Criminal moniker was invented.
It's best if you add your own. This way you can showcase your individualism.
Imagine if the media's presentation of Democrat vs. Republicans was similarly challenged (especially with regards to scandals and pending legislation).
