My take: emulate the cash-on-hand folk to shield from the (now I feel inevitable) theft of the government. At least I can keep the results of my labor safe from the first hammer blow.

Yes. Not only is Cyprus stealing 10%, but when the banks finally open, there will be capital controls, because otherwise everyone will withdraw everything, and the banks will collapse by Friday. They will limit cash withdrawls to small amounts per day. If people can't live and pay bills on that amount, it will hurt a lot.

Silver is currency and gold is a storage of wealth. I would recommend American Gold Eagles, American Silver Eagles and junk silver. I would also recommend trusted online dealers like Provident Metals and Apmex. Don’t be swayed by naysayers that claim that in a SHTF scenario that gold and silver will not be accepted. There will not be a Mad Max Zombie Apocalypse end-of-the world TEOTWAWKI. It will be hard times with chaos and violent, civil unrest, but gold and silver have been money for 3,000 years. You can purchase AGE’s in fractions of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. And remember if you don’t hold it, you don’t own it. Good luck.

Gold is only for a short term SHTF scenario, say no longer than 90 days of instability.

In a long term YEARS long scenario, gold will be worthless. You can’t eat gold and barter with it will be insane.

I disagree. Gold (and other PMs) will transport your wealth to the next era, whatever that will happen to be. It's not to barter for bread, it's to keep a lifetime of savings intact, or, relatively intact, through the Coming Unpleasantness. Maybe, just maybe, (but, don't count on it) it will appreciate and become a fortune in the future above what it costs you today to acquire. (Consider that there's about 1 ounce of gold and less than half an ounce of silver, or so, for every man, woman and child presently alive on this Earth, right now. So that's your "fair share" if it were equally divided. With any luck, you will be able to collect more than this - perhaps by a significant multiple.)

Coins.
I purchase about 10 grand at a time.\
Full ounces and 1/2 ounces to make it close
Shame about that boating accident where I lost most of my gold and ALL my guns about twenty miles off Fort Pierce while skeet shooting flying fish.

Yes, and you are creating a paper trail. “They” know you’ve got the gold. Is there a way to buy silver and gold eagles with cash (that’s legal, you know, in certain quantities)—? Frankly, unless you are willing to do a lot of traveling far from home, it’s impossible.

nearly every city has folks standing around with signs saying we buy gold. you can purchase it in many of those same places for slightly over the days floating price.
Purchase one at a time for cash if that’s your fear.
Personally I’m hoping some jack booted thugs try coming to my home to steel my stuff.
Only thing is bring your own scale and again buy coins as a chain is usually not solid gold.

OF COURSE not!
Not any more than they would, say, send a swat team armed with automatic military assault rifles storming into a private home to abduct a 5-year-old Cuban exile, whose mother died getting him to freedom, so they could return that child to the brutal communist dictatorship he escaped from.

“By the way I still don’t see a ‘Mad Max’ scenario myself, but a ‘Bosnian’ type that would be bad enough for me and I deem very possible in a country as divided as we are becoming.”

Depends on how uppity North Korea gets. Bosnia was different then the US. They were a small country with two significant demographic groups.

I agree the Bosnian type scenario is more likely in the event of a financial crisis. Could happen very quickly when they close the banks or it could be slow as they continue to devalue the currency. I think its very likely that violent crime will rise significantly once the EBT cards stop. That book written by the two ex special forces guys has a nice table looking at the different scenerios.

IMO the mad max part comes in when the muslims, north koreans, chinese, russians, or mexicans decide to take over/destroy the US.

"They were a small country with two significant demographic groups."

We have two significant and quickly growing demographic groups right here in the US. One Red one Blue and I see it heading the same way it did the last time we had two such opossed groups back when one was Blue and other one was Grey.

I appreciate your sentiment — and do have any idea how long it will take me to process the great and of course, in FReeper tradition, contradictory, posts???

But I would appreciate it if we would leave Musette out of this. You have no idea how tough it is to lock off Holodeck 4 for “training exercises.”

>>We have two significant and quickly growing demographic groups right here in the US. One Red one Blue and I see it heading the same way it did the last time we had two such opossed groups back when one was Blue and other one was Grey. <<

In the 1860’s both sides produced, just in different ways and using different methods

Today, 47% of the people “produce” by hanging on the backs of those who create wealth and value. The latter are the modern-day slave class (the more wealthy, the more enslaved). The former are the slave-masters, and are given both government sanction and societal approval to use that whip. And 51% of the entirety support the whole scheme.

(that might be my best post ever)
