Mars One co-founder tells CBC about its proposed one-way trip to the Red Planet
Mars One hopes to have people living on the planet for the rest of their lives by 2023.(Mars One/YouTube)
The man behind the private space project dubbed Mars One is looking for people to travel to Mars, but he's not offering a return ticket.
"The technology to get humans to Mars and keep them alive there exists," Bas Lansdorp told Day 6 host Brent Bambury in an interview that aired this week on CBC Radio.
"The technology to bring humans from Mars back to Earth simply does not exist yet."
Lansdorp said he's looking for people who are utterly dependable, good in groups and "at their best when things are at their worst."
The never-to-return explorers will require eight years of training, and the search starts this year.
The flight is scheduled to leave in Sept. 2022.

“Now this is the plan. Get your a$$ to Mars, go to the Hilton Hotel and flash the fake Brubaker ID at the front desk. That’s all there is to it ”
Sign me up!
Absolutely! And there’s only a 21 minute delay, max, when earth and Mars are on opposite sides of the Sun. Heck, we often have worse than that here on earth when the server burps.
Unfortunately, not. No one is going to go to Mars to be a maid.
Then I’ll DEFINITELY not go!
Most settlers in human history have known they were going on a one way trip. At least these people will be able to communicate with their loved ones by videochat.
Dang!
I guess I’ll just stay here then and clean my own house.
Another dream dashed.
I aint too far behind ya...
Can’t we just send all the whacko liberals? And how about muzzies....they should go to. In fact, there are a lot of people we’d be better off without.
“Send all the Obama voters.”
aka the Walking Deadocrats.......and send their leader
along w/them.
As long as I can play “Little Ole Man” by Bill Cosby I’ll be just fine!

Found a Volunteer
That’s what I’m thinking. At my age? Heck, it’d be a kick. Wouldn’t do it if I were young, though.
We should do with our prisoners the same thing the British did with their convicts. I'm sure there'll be plenty of volunteers from our prison.
"Lansdorp said he's looking for people who are utterly dependable, good in groups and "at their best when things are at their worst."
Well, they ARE good in groups...
By 2022, Mars might look a lot more attractive, especially if the political/financial situation doesn’t change.
If the democrats are still in power, I’d be happy to go.
It's not that easy. You need almost as much fuel to return from Mars as to get there. The payload to (fuel + overhead) ratio for a trip to Mars is horrendous. There is no booster or staging system that exists today that could take anyone from earth to Mars and back. Those Mars Rover gizmos do not have the overhead of keeping human beings alive and we have absolutely zero chance of bringing them back. The whole idea is a non-starter.
Will I be able to get all Duck Dynasty episodes?
