Who among us used to be one of those long-haired flea-infested dope-smoking denizens of the rock concert world?
Guilty. And recovered.
Post up some old tunes for a Saturday night.
Great graphic. Love telling young folks, who I saw 1974- 1984... Some even as backup bands.
Funny what talking dirty in a voice buzz box will do to record sales.. :)
Maybe not the greatest music, but the greatest muscians in rock history were Emerson Lake, and Palmer. All three virtuosos. Modern era, Rush.
Oh, I'm the one, alright. I like Scottish folk music, Tchaikovsky, and Funkadelic, but my radio dial stays pinned on 99.5 The Wolf!
(I know, I know. I'm just wired that way :)
I hear you but....Bread?
I think when discussing the genre of Rock you could cite some bands that exemplify harmony better...Crosby, Stills and Nash, for example...
Bread is music Valium....IMO....some days, we need that.
Cheers....
I told my husband about this thread and how so many of you like Pink Floyd...he couldn’t be happier...
But PF nowhere near Zepp, Hendrix, Santana, etc.
No chance of falling asleep listening to them....
I always liked Edgar and Johnny both, and saw each many times.
I recently read Johnny ‘s biography, and it was very interesting.
Edgar has been collaborating with some jazz artists as of late, and what a smooth sax.
Mountain-Theme From an Imaginary Western.
The Kinks~Celluloid Heros. (Hollywood Boulevard)
As hot as she was, I remember reading a bit about her, and she was extremely virtuous and had very strict moral beliefs.
Poco-Kind Woman & Fairport Convention-Sloth. All these songs are great old tunes that bring me back to the days when I could Jump in my 63’ Comet and go out and buy a “Lid”
for 18.00 bucks.

The author of the thread invited us to “Post up some old tunes for a Saturday night” in connection with thee hippie generation. My wife and I have recently been compiling lists of our song collections, and most of them do happen to be in the 60s and 70s with outliers in the decades before and after. Given the invitation, Iit was convenient to quickly extract a number of the nostalgic songs from the list, regardless of how popular they were for us or the readers. By their naturre of being hit songs from that era, they are nosalgic for those of us who listened to them on the radio when they were new. The list is and was never meant tto be some kind of greatest artists and hits in my opinion or someone else’s. They are just some examples of the tunes from the period that were readily at hand from our collections. It is not meant to be some kind of popularity contest at all.
As far as Bread is cooncerned, my wife and I enjor some of their songs. She likes Aubrey and so forth. I lke ELP Tarkus, and she doesn’t. I really don’t care for some of the obscure suggestions farther up the thread, but to each his own. Even some of the songs I don’t particularly like a great deal are included in my collections for their nostalgic and sentimental reasons, or for humurous reasons. Sometimes there is nothing like a smell or the sound of an old song to evoke past memories and experiences. It’s unfortunate some folks don’t seem to want to understand it.
Crosby, Stills, & Nash (Young) are in my collections, but there are so many good nostalgic songs from the period. Antoher artist I hadn’t mentioned yet is the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. I still have their vinyl albums. I also have the Nitty Gritty Dirt band Will the Circle Remain Unbroken album on vinyl setting next to ELP Works albums on vinyl. The acid rockers into Jimi Hendrix used to look down on my interest in the Moody Blues, Electric Light Orchestra, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer and Pink Floyd...the heathens.
I’ve also been anticipating someone to chime in with objections to Fleetwood Mac. Let ‘em, we say around here.

“Then tell us, explain, the purpose of, uh, sharing with us those lists of yours.”
Although I see no reason necessary to “explain”, it is easy to simply note what the author of the thread asked for: “Post up some old tunes for a Saturday night.”
Accordingly, I posted extracts from my lists that are “old tunes” that mostly came from the hippie period or the 60s and 70s. No ulterior motive. No competition for uniqueness, greatest of something, or trying to outdo someone for some arcane reason. They’re just some tunes that were popular enough to be remembered and collected. Like the man once said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
“What makes one valuable to others is uniqueness of ones contribution, I think. Who needs to know my recipe for apple pie, or for mashed potatoes, which is already known to everyone. Ill give you a recipe for mashed potatoes that includes bulgarian buttermilk and bacon chips. Not many know it.”
Hey dude, if youse don’ like them, youse welcome to ignore ‘em.
“Popular taste is Danielle Steel, Thomas Kinkade and Dan Brown, thank you very much, Ill pass.”
By all means make yourself happy and be as stylish and uptight as you want to be. It’s a free world, right? I’m sure you won’t mind if those of us with more plebian tastes indulge in the popular pap you find so outre?
“As for Peter Frampton, his multi-million selling album Frampton Comes Alive was at one point on the lists of the worst rock albums ever.”
I always get a good laugh at that one. Peter Frampton and his album first came to my attention when a friend and co-worker, who also happened to be and ASCAP artist, recommended it to me. He invited me down as a guest to a studio recording session in West Hollywood one day. The crew and artists got to talking about the bands we liked, and they found it interesting how so many of us liked ELO, ELP, Pink Floyd, The [Guess} Who, and the Nitty Gritty Band for different reasons. Peter Frampton’s album had just been released, and they insisted I had to add it to the collection. I liked it then and today, so other opiions to the contrary are just so much noise so far as I’m concerned. music is supposed to be fun, and Peter Frampton’s album was playful and fun.
“Popular taste. Whats to brag about if you follow the crowd?”
“Brag”? Who said anything about bragging, except you? If there is anyone who wants to waste their time bragging, let them do it somewhere else and let the rest of us just listen to our music in peace and have some fun and nostalgic memories. Me follow the crowd? I thought the crowd was follwong me!
Has anyone heard from him since he and Alice Cooper did Billion Dollar Babies?
But, Barrett was very influential. “Shine On You crazy Diamond” of 1974 was written as a tribute to him. It's hard to say whether he was just another tragic casualty of the excesses of era, or if a breakdown was inevitable, but he's one of the prime examples.
If you're a fan of the show “Boardwalk Empire” listen to this again, then listen to that amazing theme song. That riff is clearly Barrett-inspired.
it’s okay. I was block copying excerpts from my .ODT tables. If anyone is interested, I could continue down the list and excerpt some more?
