Why? Should Ford have to continue supporting the Pinto, too?

Spoken like a true BIG GOVT socialist dictating what a company should do with its products. In general, you (newfreep) are right. But Microsoft really is a special case; it has a near-monopoly on computer operating systems. They should not be legally forced to support older systems, but ethically they should do so.
It's almost as if Ford had a monopoly on car and parts production in the USA, and Ford decided not to make spare parts for any car built before 2008.

Pff... yeah, right. They sold you an operating system, not a perpetual support contract. In fact, all of the product updates that you got free of charge from them since you bought the system are given to you only because MS deems it a good business move; they have absolutely no obligation to give out a single update for free.

It is for car companies, at least for 20 years.

It shoud be illegal for Microsoft to withdraw support. I disagree. The government has it's tentacles in way too many aspects of your life, and corporations, as is -- that said, I think Microsoft could get some kudos if they released it [XP, or even Win98se] to the general public as freeware/open source.

It shoud be illegal for Microsoft to withdraw support. Yes it should! The Obama Administration should intervene immediately and tell Microsoft that it cannot stop supporting a 12 year old product because it's still in use by people who are too lazy, stupid, or both to upgrade their computers to a supported operating system.
Yep, the Obama Administration and the Federal Government have done such a good job regulating our economy and business they may as well regulate the operating systems on our desks!
All Heil Obama/OS!
Of course this is sarcasm, does it really need a tag?!

I happen to agree with Sacajaweau, and for those with the smart butt comments, companies USED to care about the consumer, what the buyer wanted. As for "should Ford still be making parts for Pinto", well if you OWN a Pinto, and LIKE a Pinto why not? You can get parts for a Model A. Why should someone be DRAGGED into a system that they've heard all their friends bitch and moan about. I haven't heard too many people say a good thing about Windows 7 OR Windows 8. So, stow your anger. If someone wants to be using Windows XP, then yeah, updates should be available for it.
