The German unemployment rate is closer to seven percent. Generally, they are recruiting for technical positions now...into Spain, Greece, and even the US...bringing temp workers in for professional jobs for a period of a couple of years.

The German education system simply isn’t built to deliver smart folks over a three to five year period. You’d have to plan twenty years out...based on they operate.

As for these migrants...they are using the standard rules...moving in, and taking part-time jobs...then claiming disability or welfare. The Germans have never had anything like this before, and they’d have to write new laws to cover this. The comical side of this....it was already noted and reported back five years ago...and no one has done anything but let it slide on.

The last observation I can make over this...if you look at the kids involved in these families...they really don’t fit into the German education system, and it’s hard to imagine how they will exist over the next three or four decades...except to be on welfare the whole time.

re: "The German unemployment rate is closer to seven percent....--I overlooked this in the story...--"Many are uneducated or unskilled, and will struggle to find work in a city where unemployment is at 16 per cent." Also your comment about the German educational system rings true....interesting.....thanks 'V'

I have German friends, and I did grad work over there. The German education system tests kids at AGE 10, to see if they are college bound material. If they are—they go to college prep schools—if not, they go to either vocational training for highly skilled work (qualifying say for a $40K job at age 19, as a welder or machinist) or, track 3, for unskilled labor, as a janitor or clerk somewhere.

Little “Doner Kabab” shops are everywhere—where Turkish or other immigrants sell (rather dilicious) Gyro type sandwiches for lunch...and that appears to be the only work those immigrants do.

Immigrants such as these overwelmingly fit into track 3...with their lack of language and schooling...(but these kids are, legally...required to go to school), hence they will forever fit into the lowest class of Germany.

The 3 track system, while effective in making very skilled workers, and engineers & other specialists in the upper tracks—is also a big reason why opportunities for advancement are lower in Germany, ESPECIALLY if you are an immigrant.
