Does any of that stuff work in a steel building or a fallout shelter?

AM works everywhere and works damn well.
That is why Emergency broadcasts are on AM.

I certainly hope not. I guess one can always install after-market stereos with radio receivers, but I wonder about antennae...

I find this hard to believe. Adding an AM & FM receiver to a sound system is cheap compared to the cost of the amps and speakers. If you already have something that plays Edison wax cylinders CDs along with an MP3 player then adding radio isn't hard. And it is really cheap compared to adding some wireless internet capable system.

AM can have troubles in some buildings/workplaces, as can FM.
But overall...yes (and AM, great distances at night). But 20 per cent of listening now is to AM...

The NAB will spread a little money around Capitol Hill and the result will be a Federal law requiring all auto manufacturers to equip each vehicle with an AM/FM radio. Take that to the bank.

This is a slippery slope.

So what can you do?

1. You need to believe this is happening. It's now a fact, directly from the mouths of the people behind it.

2. You had better start working out a strategy to strengthen your brand relationship with your audience now so they'll still seek you out when they have tens of thousands of other choices.

3. You need to be on the TuneIn or iHeart platforms (probably both), and you need to be streaming.

4. If you want to fight this, you may want to consider starting with your local congressman. Congress may wish to consider legislation to require in-car receivers for safety purposes -- though I'm not big on forcing regulation on consumer preferences. But Hurricane Sandy made it clear once again that Internet and cell signals cannot be relied upon for safety, and radio is the only means of communication that stays on the air in an emergency. Removing it from cars might not go over well with consumers for that reason alone.

5. You may consider having a talk with your biggest advertisers, local car dealers, to ask them to offer their input to the car companies. Pressure can change things quickly -- but be careful; this approach could backfire.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ummmm, Isn't this exactly the reason why AM/FM radio is on its way out?
Unfortunately the AM station I listen to most of the time has a very low threshold for an emergency.
[siren alert]
A possum has been run over on Wilmington Pike. Although the carcass is not blocking any lanes, people are slowing down to look at the crows picking at it. Expect traffic delays of up to ten seconds.
The only thing I listen to in my car is
satellite radio, and keep it tuned to the old broadcasts from the 30’s, 40’, 50’s etc. Stories we listened to as kids, such as The Green Hornet, Fibber McGee and Molly, Jack Benny, etc. I would surely hate to lose that!
Receiving a radio signal is free. Listening to streaming radio on a smartphone requires a data plan subscription, and may have monthly limits.
I guess this would be one way for the union thugs to shut Limbaugh up.
You betcha.
In fact, a multi-function sound system with multiple input and output options may cost no more than a simpler system that you only plug your iPhone into.
I was told there was extensive research to support the lack of interest in radio among youth and that GM researches everything to make sure they are giving consumers what they want.
As evidenced by the SOBs going bankrupt and having us bail their sorry butts out. Right.
AM works everywhere and works damn well.
AM is subject to structural and electrical interferences such as power lines, parking structures and office buildings. It is also affected by the changes in atmospheric conditions after sunset.
FM is not.......
