I've had friends that did 14 months at "the Rock"and they liked it, but Shemya isn't for the faint of heart.
One said the most interesting times were when an airliner had to land there due to an emergency,
and the base had to assist with the care and upkeep of 350 additional people for 2 or 3 days, until they got the civilian airliner fixed and on its way.

A visiting airliner? Boy...that would have broken up the monotony. We'd kill for that kind of excitement.
We'd get USO Tours once a month while I was there. You talk about guys starved for any kind of entertainment.
Seal Pointe was a point of interest for us airmen out there. You could see these seals thrashing about, establishing dominance. Every now and then a dead seal would wash up along the shoreline. That was our news.
