Cleopatra and Anthony could be real bast*rds when they had to bethat went with the territory of being a ruler (still isif you doubt this just ask Princess Dianabut you might need a Ouija Board). I think that the great game they were playing forced them to do in this young womanthey lost the power struggle with Octavian/Augustus Caesar or a whole different Roman Empire might have existedone with more of an Egyptian Flavor one that might have not forced the Jews into rebellion, maybe one where Jesus didnt threaten things??? What might have been if Cleopatra hadnt fled at Actium? Egyptian Flavor? Hardly? Egypt under Ptolemaic rule was more like a Greco-Roman flavor then Egyptian, heck Greek was even the official language of the country under Ptolemy rule cause the Ptolemies didn't even bother to learn Egyptian. Egyptians and Jews weren't anymore thrilled about their Hellenistic overloads then they were about the Romans who came later. Ptolemy IV Philopater and Ptolemy V Epiphanes both hated the Jews. They persecuted Jews for about 40 years during their reigns and they desecrated their temples. The Ptolemys and the other Hellenistic Dynasty in that area the Seleucuns fought against each other over territory and many times Egyptian and Jewish people were caught up in the crossfire. The Jewish people were finally glad to be rid of the Ptolemys after the Seleucuns took over in Judea but they didnt fare much better under their rule either.
As far as Arsinoe goes, those aren't the bones of Arsinoe. The remains are far too young to be of the Ptolemaic Princess. Also don't be fooled. She was as rutheless as all other Ptomelies were. That family was made up of all power-crazed megalomaniacs right down to the last of them.
A week or so ago I picked up the Liz Taylor “Cleopatra” on BluRay — always has been a better-looking than better-sounding movie (the script is kinda awful) but the transfer is eye-popping.
