YACOLT, WA (KPTV) - There are sounds you expect to hear in prison - the locking of doors, announcements over the intercom, voices of staff members on walkie-talkies.
If you visit the Silver Star Unit at Larch Corrections Center, you may also hear something unfamiliar meows, purrs and the jingle of cat toys.
Five felines currently reside at the prison as part of a cat adoption program coordinated with the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society. The inmates socialize the cats and get them ready to be adopted.

This would be a great program for Julian and Ricky when they are in the Provincial clink

Wonderful. If a cat takes to you, you must be doing something right.

Yup. This one lived in our yard for over two years before she decided we were suitable staff.

Ah Bubbles the wise. Vince the Pince lived with him in jail if I recall.
There is a reality show about prisoners who have dogs and take care of them as well. The name and network escapes me at the moment.

“Beautiful tortie girl!”
I understand that torties are girls by nature. I had a beaut awhile back. In the wee hours of the night she would creep up in bed with me, put a paw out and just test to see if I was with it or not. Dragged her out from under a barn when she was a wee one. Great cat.

“Kitties pick their servants carefully.”
Tell me about it while I walk from one end of the house to the other, hunched over, with a kitty on my back.

I understand that torties are girls by nature. 1999 times out of 2000, yes. The remainder are sterile males.

You mean to tell me my cuddly little cat could have been a guy? OMG. That explains the little paw-taps in the middle of the night when no one was looking.
