TCM movie alert: "Doctor Zhivago"(1965) 8PM E.S.T.
Turner Classic Movies ^ | 1965 | David Lean

Another TCM alert: tonight at 8PM it's airing "Doctor Zhivago". Definitely worth seeing as Hollywood film that actually showed how terrible life was in Soviet Russia. The only thing I don't like about it is its hero cheating on his cute wife with Lara. Otherwise, a truly great film with Rod Steiger stealing the show as the opportunistic lawyer Komarovsky.

“We endured it because of our cursed capacity to endure’’. Speaks volumes about the Russian mindset under Communism. And a lot of the mindset of the majority of the democrat voters of the state I live in— New Jersey.

Casablanca much better than Doctor Z.

the Godfather and Godfather II better than anything made before or since. Fugetaboutit!

(Godfather III was a horrible movie)

No, Camp Geiger, a few miles away from Lejeune. When I say we froze, I meant it literally.
The only reprieve we had was the day we fam-fired the flame thrower :)

My favorite scene is where they cut to the house covered in snow.

That scene was filmed in Spain...

As a consolation prize, Mrs. Z got to leave Russia for a relatively much freer life in Paris while the Doc and Lara stayed behind to only spend a brief time together before being permanently separated with him having a heart attack on a street trying to call out to her and Lara probably ended up dying in a work camp as Yevgraf the commie half-brother surmised so Tonya probably got the better deal in the long run.

I always thought Lara and her bizarre love/hate relationship with Komarovsky provided much greater sparks than her relationship with Zhivago. And in the end, he probably did more actual work in trying to save her than either her psycho/revolutionary fanatic husband or the doctor did.

Indeed. Franco’s Spain was probably the ideal place to film an anti-Soviet film. The scene where the protesters are singing the internationale resulted in Franco’s police showing up at the set ready to quell a revolution if need be.

Tonya or Lara? It's like Mary Ann or Ginger? Lara's the greater beauty but Tonya's a cutie and seemed to have less baggage(i.e., a crazy, mass murderous communist husband and an abusive ex-tormentor/lover) to deal with.

Indeed. I figure we all will soon be experiencing what the good doc did when he returned to his private home after World War I.

Dr. Zhivago marries his adoptive family Sister. If I remember right, they were actually slightly kin or was it only family friends?

Technically Marcia and Greg were no relation except by marriage.

Mary Ann or Ginger always makes a fun discussion but I have read that in actual polls it isn’t even close. Most choose Mary Ann, and just one look at her body makes it clear why.

Just family friends. Their mothers were great friends so one could say they were probably sort of arranging the marriage.

I’m a Mary Ann guy myself-

Mary Ann or Ginger?

Tonya or Lara?

Janet or Chrissy?

Bailey or Jennifer?

The questions all men ponder.

Mary Ann,

Lara,

Chrissy,

Bailey,

oh yes, and Marcia over Susan Dey. I think both of them turned out to be a little sluttish tho.

Consider that the exclamation “I'm shocked!’’ uttered by the ever urbane sophisticate Claude Rains has become a well entrenched part of our national lexicon.
