Danica Patrick backed up her fast practice speeds during NASCAR Sprint Cup Daytona 500 qualifying on Sunday, taking the pole position for the race.
Patrick was the eighth to go out in the session and knocked teammate and Stewart-Haas Racing team co-owner Tony Stewart out of the pole position. Patrick's qualifying lap of 196.434 mph eclipsed the 195.925 mph lap of Stewart.

That must be top speed rather than lap speed. The current closed-course speed record is 241.426mph, set by Gil de Ferran at Fontana in 2000 in qualifying for that year’s CART race there.
There is also a rather famous instance of a Porsche sports car running around a high-banked NASCAR oval, specifically Mark Donohue in a 917/30 Can-Am car in 1975. His best lap was 221.160mph, a record at the time which stood until 1980. BTW, according to some reports, the 917/30 was capable of over 260mph flat-out.

Nice. Watkins Glen is the only reason I'd want to visit New York State. :)
OTOH, I live only about an hour from Laguna Seca, and an hour and a half from Sears Point Infineon Sonoma Raceway.

Danica usually does well in qualifying.
Her problem (lack of wins) comes when there is traffic on the track.
