We were faced with this situation. My wife got an amniocentesis. The genetic testing was fast and covered by our insurance. It was 100% accurate. If you are pre screened, that’s good. Get screened before you do something stupid.

But amniocentesis cannot tell you the degree to which the child's intellect will be impacted by the condition, except that if the child is mosaic Down Syndrome the probability that he will suffer severe cognitive problems is greatly reduced.
