And here come the dogs !!!
If you click on any of the photos, to the side of the photo in FlickR you should see the rest of the set he took of the American Cattle Dog Club’s herding trial (AKC is not simply about beauty contests, for those who don’t know)
Gorgeous. I have one that nips your heels. :)
The AKC and function have long parted ways.
Thanks, I’ll go check out the rest.
pits are clowns
This was shot at an AKC herding trial.
Looks pretty doggone functional to me.
It took me months of saying “no bite” to stop mine, all three are determined to herd something - anything.
Clearly photoshopped. Can’t be trusted.
AKC lure coursing trial (Afghan hound and Rhodesian Ridgeback)
AKC Water Dog Trial contestant:
Who names their Doberman, “Fifi”???
photos “are from between 22 Jul 2006 & 31 May 2009”
You can thank the specialty club not the AKC if these dogs perform well.

They hold events that have been and that must be approved and sanctioned by AKC. These events are run by AKC rules, judged by AKC judges and feature AKC registered dogs.
You said AKC and function parted ways. I say you are mistaken and I can prove it. Are many pet dogs bred that couldn’t perform the task for which their breed was created?
You betcha. But, there are a lot of folks that celebrate their dogs’ heritage and who work to keep that function alive in their chosen breed.
Oh, and those clubs? They are licensed by AKC to hold those trials. “Parent” clubs (specializing in one breed) are members of the AKC. THEY own and write the standard for that breed and THEY are responsible for protecting the breed, not AKC. But neither they nor AKC can stop irresponsible or clueless people from breeding dogs that lack breed characteristics or are not free of genetic disease.
Point your finger at those people for the loss of a given dog’s inability to perform the task for which it was developed.

I don’t think the AKC conformation standards have much to do with breed function. In fact some of the standards actually impair function.
Herding trials, lure coursing, retriever trials, obedience, etc are great. Maybe every titled conformation dog should also have to pass their breeds function trial in order to qualify for a conformation title. Then form and function would be in sync.

She is perfect.
I really hope she gets what she should’ve gotten last year.
The breeds are slaves to fashion and fad.
The GSDs today are abominations compared to the solid, *flat backed*, conservatively angled original dogs.
A pox upon the breeders and “judges” who have condemned them to hip dysplasia as *puppies* for the sake of a ‘dramatic silhouette’.
My vet had one come in with HD at _6 months of age_.
That is why Fifi is perfect...she's jazzed up enough to pass as a show dog yet she is perfect in her gait and still retains her ability to be a *working* Dobe.
Normally I do not watch Westminster because the dogs horrify me.
So few breeds have remained true to their original form and function that it depresses me to watch them.
I'd much rather watch the European Dobermann show videos on YouTube.
Over there, if at least one parent does not have at least one *working* title, it is not allowed to breed.
They got their minds right.
The GSD in this show ~did~ 'fit the current AKC standard' very well...more's the pity.
