.308 Winchester
vanity | 7 Febuary 2013 | M.K.Borders

Considering an upgrade into. 308 Winchester for some long shooting. Mostly predator hunting but also some competition. Lots of folks pointing me to the Remington 700 but I'm not getting real excited about that particular gun. Don't like that particular nylon stock and the action seems loose. Leaning toward Savage but would like some opinions.

I have a Rem 700 SPS Tactical with threaded barrel and adjustable trigger. I did not like the stock from the manufacturer, so I upgraded it to a Bell and Carlson M40 drop-in stock (has an aluminum bed and skeleton running the length of the stock instead of just pillars). With the stock upgrade this is now the best rifle I’ve ever owned.

MidwayUSA sells the stock, just search item 1103114579 on their site.

I also had a Badger Ordnance detachable magazine system installed (sent the stock off to Badger), so now I have an extremely reliable .308 platform with muzzle brake for less rise and better repeat shots, full aluminum bedding for sub .5-MOA accuracy at 100y, and a detachable magazine system with 10-round Accuracy International mags instead of the stock bottom plate.

I highly, highly recommend all of the above.

Um... they completely changed the trigger mechanism out in the last decade. Not the same trigger any more.

I really don’t know what the make and model number is. My buddie has it. It is computerized. You shoot through a tunnel. He is very professional, so , I am sure it is an accurate read. It is a varmint / coyote load, a little light for deer, but, it would work. It is a little more hopped up than the .243.

If you wan a real tack driver .308 Win rifle, buy yourself a Savage Model 10 FP Tactical (or whatever the current description is now). The new Model 10 FP comes with a set trigger (AccTrigger) that older guns did not have, and is drilled for scope mounting only; no provision exists for iron sights.

I had a Savage Model 10 FP and it was one sweet rifle. I put the action in a Choate “Ultimate Sniper” stock, added a set trigger from Sharp Shooter Supply, a Versa-Pod bipod, Mil-Std 1913 scope mounting rail, A.R.M.S. No. 22M 30mm throw lever rings, and a Tasco 10x42M Super Sniper mil dot scope from SWFA. This sucker would shoot!

The latest in the precision rifle department is the Model 10 FCP-SR; here: http://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/savage-model-10-fcp-sr-sniper-rifle-new-gun-review/

Ruger makes some fine rifles. The Ruger M77 Hawkeye comes in .308, has a nice wood grained stock. (Standard).

they even make a left handed model.

No, but, big sis wants to know about the firearm you are “huntin” with to be placed in the federal registry for confiscation later! The “dog” will come later. Whether most Americans know this or not, the 25 Executive Orders included orders to the DOJ to start the collection of intelligence on all firearms and firearm owners in the United States, Freerepublic is just one blog site where the freddy’s monitor for this info. You have been warned.

“Um... they completely changed the trigger mechanism out in the last decade. Not the same trigger any more.”

The Marines at Quantico in 2012 sent a whole load of Remington 700’s in .300 back because of failure. Sometimes they would be taking the bolt out of battery and it would fire, sometimes they would be moving the bolt forward into battery and it would fire, and sometimes they would be acquiring a target and it would fire. These were .300’s but the problem is will all model 700’s or derivatives.

Remington has fritzed around with the trigger mechanism but have never fixed it. It would be too expensive they just pay out for the lawsuits. We have a friend who agains’t our advice just bought one in .308 and with a few days had a misfire. He immediately got rid of it. My fiancee’ will not hunt with anybody who is carrying one. They are too dangerous.

The old trigger mechanism is still available on order and for certain specialty models. The rest all have the all-new XMarkPro triggers, which are completely different.

The USMC specced the old triggers.

I'm in southern Indiana. Jasper to be exact. No hi-power for deer here though most “black powder “ deer hunters who use in lines are easily making hi-power velocities.
